I had a buddy, from Greece, who smoked cigarettes. (He had this project to translate the lyrics to all Neil Young songs into Greek.)
I asked about the "worry beads" and he told me they were to prevent him from smoking too much. Which it seemed he smoked all the time. I couldn't imagine what smoking too much would be.

Those which play the Kompoli just to prevent themselves from smoking are unrelated with this item and they use it wrong. They just want to have their hand busy so they won't reach for a cigarette because the lack of nicotine make them nervous. In pipe smoking i play gently the Kompoloi when arrive at the Cafe and before the coffee comes, also in the intermission of the smoking and when i finish and wait for the bill to come. Kompoli especially if it's hand-made shows many things for your character and your style, is a part of you.

I am going to have to do some reading up. For whatever reason this is interesting to me. My dad had some given him by someone he befriended from Greece, I don't remember the story. The beads were a bright cream orange color. They hung on our wall in the den all of my growing up. I haven't thought about Petros in a long time. I remember I asked him what preconceptions he had about America that were shattered when he came over. He said he somehow thought most people in America played the banjo, and here he had been in the country for a few years and had not met a single banjo player. |
