Can't be any worse than the fast food chains that blight our cities and highways. I spent a day trip in New York , room for fast food improvement, we paid our respects at the two towers , God bless the fallen. We went up the Empire State Building & on the Manhattan ferry, waved to the Statue of Liberty as we passed.Took a yellow taxi in busy traffic and came back to the train station by underground, maybe next time Central Park & the Cathedral & Culture....a nice day trip in a nice city.

I grew up 20 minutes west of New York City. The city of today is a much better place than it was in the 1970's. Mayor Rudy Giuliani cleaned it up very nicely. The current mayor is a nut but the city has had bad mayors before and always remains resilient. The sad thing is that when I worked at Pfizer in the late '70s there were at least 5 pipe shops within a few blocks of our offices. I think there may be one left.

I found my visit was agreeable and the people friendly , good vibes on the whole . Well Liverpool is the same the infrastructure and architecture has some improvement despite the negative publicity. But we have the crazy situation of having our traditional rather ceremonial Lord Mayor of the City government but now we have been burdened with a seperate all powerful supreme Mayor who is completely lost the plot he is a small town populist councillor , too big for his boots , in the hand of big bad money. We had many olde worlde pipe tobacconists in my younger days probably with Victorian roots, now only one relocated modern shop , one shop for cigars next to another for pipes & tobacco, but they are planning a cigar lounge due to open this year last time I heard. So if you come to Liverpool on an Atlantic Cruise or fly directly to John Lennon Or Manchester Airport it may be open , they may even have a pipe club of Liverpool to match the London club, who knows but Ringo Starr knows everything , he's is a global celebrity with world wide friends and has trillions in Thorschilds bank , or so I heard in the Crack an old pub

My home town of Liverpool the global capital of culture, has a variety of eating places of many nationalities with an old China town of Chinese restaurants , with the usual American fast food and coffee shops, but our local pubs and clubs are being closed down all over, but many more sanitised franchise bars remain, still some classic traditional pubs to be discovered on the real ale trail, in town and around. But the variety of local seaside resorts have been modernised to some extent with American and local Restaurants and cafes, with some of their Victorian and Edwardian features remaining, such as the picturesque West Kirby on the Wirral peninsular with a bit of temperate style in the English tea and scone "class" but welcomes all, beside the River Dee with views of Snowden and Anglesey in Cymru on a good day, the sailing marina for dinghies and windsurfing is ok, and wind surfing off the long tidal shore is bracing and feisty , the low tide opens Hilbre Islands for a nice walk in a good tide be careful . New Brighton over the River Mersey was the old beach deckchairs , funfair , amusement arcade, sweet rock and lollipop for the kids on a family day out with fish chips or sandwiches (and traditional pubs, )on the fine beach beneath the Perch Rock fort & lighthouse to the south and the now removed Mersey ferry pier on the other side of the main beach. The improvements have given a modern cinema and cafes & restaurants, and American fast food and supermarkets even a casino (in the balance) , a marina for the windsurfers dinghy so and all, a good spot for sea angling from beach or private boat. The theatre gives light entertainment , with a cafe and events in season, book faires etc. And the Victorian park and bandstand often has music and kids stuff. There are local fisheries for the angler ( coarse fishing) , and country side sites and farms to visit and old country Pubs with pub food on winding country roads in places. To the north of Liverpool within Merseyside of the old county of Lancashire, there is the biggest resort of Southport, with many features in its sedate elegant town , with the nature park of seaside Formby in between the City and town. But the city and town have for fast food traditional British fish and chip fast food places have that some quality food most having local Chinese chefs from the old Chinese community providing an International cuisine, from Chinese to Indian to kebab, burger or omelette, at a modest price, a lot of Greek Cypriots locally have a a lot meals of traditional Fish & Chips shop takeaways with some giving traditional Fish & Chips cafe style in the town centre. Within a short train or car journey their are many natural , cultural and historical sites for al flavours of modern and popular culture and cuisine tastes. But there is nowhere I can go and have a pipe and a traditional British meal , not even outdoors, like in some Mediterranean country's , no Tapas bars as in Spain. But our local pub would put on some British style tapas at Sunday lunchtime, for locals and all , but another old haunt closed in world economic development. But is the same for most places it seems, some parts are even banning smoking and vaping outdoors and on the beach. But as I say I try to be content with my home comforts in my cottage cell.

As Mr Confucius said when I was in China town why use many words when a photo or Chinese character will do, brevity is the soul of wit or "confucion " , the two photos are of course from China and not yet a feature of Liverpool but my Chinese tai chi masters enterprise plan for marketplace dominition, Mr Kong has as big sense of humour and large appetite like the big jolly buddha but planning laws, bye laws , health and safety laws , consumer laws , closed shop monopolies of established business will not allow are industrious shaolin tai chi masters to open their noodle get t rich quick franchises in our town yet.. Any one prepared for ninja frog fighting , not me I prefer to play music with the cissies these days, until I get my wing's., bu- bum

I have been to a few places around the world, but none impressed me more than Japan in the early 1970's. Not just the bustling overcrowded city, but the high mountains where traditional life was still respected, and moved at a snail's pace. The Japanese people then were as cordial and helpful as could be to this American lad who knew not a lick of their language - though I never got lost in the streets with a stranger's helpful friendly walk to my destination.
I often wonder what our civilizations will be like in 500-1000 years, if any still remain.

The Japanese people then were as cordial and helpful as could be to this American lad who knew not a lick of their language - though I never got lost in the streets with a stranger's helpful friendly walk to my destination. I often wonder what our civilizations will be like in 500-1000 years, if any still remain. I friend of mine a zen monk a Brit and his Japanese wife are seasoned travelers over the years, and they spent almost a year in Japan not long ago , and are going again for a few months, and I feel as if I know Japan well with the little Japanese group of diaspora that I am acquainted with, it is in the stars you might say. I had some Japanese green tea off them, Kyoto golden temple a fine gift. That is the mystery of language , words nor images can totally grasp the present moment never mind tomorrow, or even yesterday. I met a lovely Japanese young lady many years ago when working with a charity called L'Arche they have communities in the states, it was not to be , a bridge to far. But what is civilisation commonly is it grand architecture and the good and the great and their wars. But civilisations grow and fade, why try and grasp smoke rings or even be dazzled by them, I live the little way, doing the little thing of the old masters of my father's before me, I do not know the good and the great , why do I need to be in their presence , the wind blows and the tree bends and stands. Can one person know another can one tree know another, to be and say I am this , but poetry and madness is but one aspect of the life of war & sex, I man in a monastery , a prison , a room , a cottage, though are not that...and move on like the stream , the breath , the blood flow. But the word raises man above nature like a bird song gives him flight. But lunchtime calls we have to be thankful for all our gifts with gratitude and some humility. Enjoy the weekend Baboo.

Yo Stan
I wish I had realized sooner that you were visiting the States. The fine New York Pipe Club had a pipe gathering last night at the Hyatt. Are you staying in the States long?
