Original VIP came in the mail from pipestud today. Do I need to say how great of service he gives?
Guessing this is 25+ years old. So, waiting longer to open it seemed foolish. It opened up still semi-squishable, meaning no hydration or drying time needed. Perfect. Tin note was definitely TREEmendous. Birch was obvious. The Burley took on a tad bit of smoky burgundy. Not a charcoal smoke, very clean.
Packed it in my Morgan Cob and went to town on it. It is truly unique and the Birch does have almost a wine sense and scent to it. I am sure the Burley will lose a little of that in a while, as did the smokiness in 1936 Briggs. This tobacco burns nicely, no goop on the bottom, though I am betting it would create a nice cake over time.
If there really is a comparison it would be to Sutliff Hickory Match, though the latter is a little sweeter and fruitier.
This was one of my must tries because I love the Sutliff Match so well, which HOE VIP bears no resemblance to. Not in the least. However, as I have often stated, the Sutliff Matches are often better tobaccos in their own right. This may be the case here. I will enjoy smoking every bit of this VIP tin, so don't get me wrong. It is a total pleasure. It's unique. The Sutliff Match actually has a cocoa aspect to it, not in this original blend. Of the Match I have about three pounds. The 14 ounces of this will suit me. Considering the cost of a tub of Heine's or EGR, this was a real bargain and great buy. If you have to have a birch beer flavor, find a tin of this. If you want a good Burley blend, Match VIP. If you are looking for something close, Match Hickory and go no further.
HOE VIP could be an all day smoke. It's mild. No bite. I feel that smoking it regularly all day would ruin the pleasure.
I rate this at 4.5 of 5 stars. I bumped it up from 4 because of the uniqueness of it, and that I am really happy to have a tin of it.
Reminder on my ratings. All tobacco starts at 3 stars, right in the middle, which is why I use a 5 Star Rating. 4 Stars would be Superior. The added 1/2 means above and beyond. 5 Stars mean better than Sex or Pizza. You all know which I prefer
