That's why there is a debate (there's always a debate about something, isn't there?) about storing pipes stem up or stem down.
Liberal application of pipe cleaners will help, too.

Once you have been at it for a while, you learn to control your draw and pretty much avoid it...

After each pipe I smoke I lean the pipe so the stem faces completely vertical and with a small piece of rolled paper towel I thoroughly stuff the pipe and twist until all the sides of the chamber get somewhat cleaned but most importantly the moisture on the bottom of the bowl is absorbed into the paper towel. Also clean the stem and draft separately with 2 pipe cleaners. Than give the pipe a wipe down with a microfiber clothe with my bee’s wax and mineral oil mixture. I’ve never had that nasty juice/ taste back in my mouth. It takes some time and patience. Good luck👍👍👍

Dry the tobacco thoroughly prior to smoking. Use a pipe cleaner or two during the smoke. If you're like me and produce a lot of saliva, don't do a lot of clenching. Slow and easy. Slow ... and ... easy. As long as you enjoy it and keep at it, everything will just "click" eventually.

Darin is spot on... giving the tobacco a chance to dry a bit before smoking was the difference for me between nasty goop and sheer smoking bliss... you'll get there, pete!

@darin is also right about clenching. When I smoke I also drool quite a bit,so I don't hardly ever clench my pipes. But I also keep a cloth handy to dry the button as well as pipe cleaners to swab the airway.

I've found that straight, filtered pipes help to avoid that. Ymmv
Also, cobs!!

Buy pipe cleaners in bulk, they are cheap and you never want to be without them. As soon as you notice moisture, run a cleaner through the stem, save the cleaner to do a final swab at the end of the smoke, and after dumping the ask and Dottle, bend the pipe cleaner and swab the bowl.

I swear the only time it happens to me is when in sitting comfortably outside and forgot to grab a pipe cleaner on my way out. Every... single... time.

Used to happen to me often. Drying the tobacco more and packing looser helped a lot.

My most heartfelt thanks to everybody that help me out with this thread. I have taken your advice I now store my pipes stem up with paper towel shoved in them I also dry my tobacco for about an hour before I smoke it and I use pipe cleaners liberally. These three things have turned my pipes back into pipes rather than nasty-tasting little tiny bongs. Thanks again fellas I appreciate all the help you've been giving me

Save some drying time by sticking it in the toaster oven for 3 minutes at about 180 F.
