I have been reading and also shopping pipes tobacco's and accessories. I recently ordered a pipe kit I have 5 pipes now... this one came with stainless steel screen. Do people use these? And if so how to clean it? I admit I had it and wanted to try. It seems to be helpful as far as not clogging the pipe in mid to last third of bowl. I have also seen brass/ copper types. The so one I have is like a small basket and makes for better combustion. In general I avoid conventional wisdom at all costs because imho groupthink is usually quite dangerous however in this case I'd like to hear, what why or why not about screens. I initially had a cob with a filter in stem because it came that way, but I have thrown it out and not replaced without dire consequences.

...I wouldn't bother... only time I ever used screens was back in my pot-smoking days... LONG time ago...

I have never used a screen or a filter in any of my pipes. I'm sure they have their place, but it's just not for me.
I would imagine a screen would stop up fairly quick due to moisture mixed with ash and dottle. Just something extra for me to clean. In 2 1/2 months I've had 2 small pieces of tobacco go into my stem and it wasn't enough to stop it up.

At first I thought you were talking about a windscreen which is helpful on breezy days but in the bowl...nah

I like those better than the former options of acrylic, ceramic or glass. 😝
I dont recall using screens in those either. However, I do remember small pieces of what felt like magma hitting the back of my throat at times.

I have seen them used in pipes whose airway was seriously overbored, as a precaution to inhaling hot coals.

You are talking about the little basket screens, not the little half inch pipe screens you buy at headshops.
I use the basket screens in a couple of ash pipes I have that I over smoked and did damage to the bottom of the bowl. My thought is just to keep the ember off the bottom.

I used screens back in my green leaf days in the dorm but don't have much use for them now. A well made pipe shouldn't require one. I have gravitated towards 9mm pipes but I'm particular about the draw. Savinelli 320 KS is my favorite. Meerschaum filters work well.

I use screens in the cobs. Keeps me from burning wood and also keeps small bits of nasty off my tongue. I have had any clog up a couple of years. The tobacco always smokes down to ash in the screened pipes, and a simple puff of air cleans them. In briars that are too open I use other methods.

I've never tried these myself. They sound interesting.

PS I’ve never smoked a pipe with a screen in almost 50 years. Okay, I had in the past and still do from time to time have religious shirts....some more Holy than others...lol.

Yes, I often use screens and have done so for years... copper, stainless, titanium... I shape them to match the bottom curvature of the bowl, and sometimes invert them curvature side up to add distance, and to cool n dry the smoke when called for. Makes for easier cleaning through and through. And for cobs especially because of the fragile bowl-paper bottoms!

You guys are making me want to go around the house unscrewing the faucet heads to get at the aerators. Ahhh ... memories!

Oftimes, there is a caveat...To not use a screen in my Victorian era pipe would make no sense. Notice the deep shank from the side picture, and the five holes in the bowl...to not use a screen would be silly.

I hadn't considered this. It makes sense, the way the stem comes into the bowl of a cob, it bugs me that you cannot do a clean sweep in the heel of the bowl as a in a briar. I will have to give this a shot.

Definitely with a pipe you pictured, otherwise you’d be sucking ash👍 Makes perfect sense with a Cob as well. Once I get back home later I’ll give it a try, your never to old too also learn something new!

Very similar to your link to Amazon. The ones I have are contoured round on the bottom and flat on the top.

I have tried the hemispherical ones, but I prefer the flat ones.

I burned out the bottom of a couple of old churchwardens, because i was foolish and held them by the stem like a dope. So I had no feedback as to how hot the bowl was getting. I damaged them pretty good. The hemispherical "basket" filters allow me to enjoy those pipes again.
