... Until this week. Now, granted, I haven't TRIED very many VA blends since every time I do, we don't get along... But Pease's Fillmore has blown me away. I can't get enough of this stuff. Bready, yeasty, stewed-fruity, spicy, with a definite fermented tang... This one blend has completely changed my mind about VaPers and VA blends. Until now, the only non - latakia blend I'd found that I really love is MacBaren Scottish Mixture, and I can pick up some similarities so I guess Mixture has a lot of VA in it, but obviously with everything else plus the flavoring in there it's different.
Sure, everyone likes what they like and that's fine... But I'd been kind of feeling like I was missing out on something by not being able to appreciate Virginia. Fillmore has helped me see the light. ;-)

True, everyone’s palate is different but glad you found a Virginia too also enjoy. The Fillmore is a fabulous blend, a matter of fact....outstanding! Now try GL Pease Telegraph Hill, I think it’s one you’ll enjoy as well. Happy hunting 👍👍

I think I see now why you didn't like the Scottish Mixture. You said it tasted/smelled like cigarettes, that was the Virginia in the blend, which is primarily what is in Davidoff's Scottish Mixture, if that is what it was. What tobaccos do you prefer over Virginias, are you a Burley smoker? I have to say that it is unusual for a seasoned pipe smoker to not be into the Virginias but its not unheard of. You may want to give Cornell and Diehl's Big and Burley a try. As far as I know, no Virginias at all.

Welcome friend. Despite the untimely demise of McClelland, it's still a good time to be a Virginia aficionado. Pease Opening Night and Union Square are both very good. Sam Gawith has some excellent Vas, Best Brown and Full Virginia Flake are standards. If you can ever find any Dunhill Flake, I'd suggest you jump on this one as it's apparently a goner soon.
Just because McClelland is pushing daisies now doesn't mean it's still not available. A lot of cellars are stuffed with it right now and there's a lot of generous pipers out there.
Good hunting.

Im not seeing any McClelland available online anymore. I do see it in tobacco shops from time to time. Have you seen it anywhere online?

eBay has them all the time but with hefty premiums.

There are threads on the board members with over 100 posts can post if they're looking to buy. You'll probably get a better deal than EBay prices.

Hah, Telegraph Hill was the other blend in the running; I debated between that and Fillmore for a while. If it's in the same vein, I'll have to give that a shot too.
I'm not sure I was the guy who said I didn't like Scottish Mixture? I'm an English/Balkan guy usually, but the one favorite I have that isn't a latakia blend is MacBaren Scottish Mixture. I love it and can definitely taste the Virginia, but of course it's also burley, and topped.
McClelland Virginias are the reason I assumed I don't get along with them; every one I've tried has... Not bitten me, exactly, but given me this prickly sensation on the tongue that I didn't like. That includes blends like Dark Star and Deep Hollow, not just brights. I thought maybe I was sensitive to Virginias, but maybe I was just sensitive to something in the McClellands process?
Well either way, it's fun to be pleasantly surprised by this Pease blend; opens up a whole new genre to try out!

I only smoked Balkan/English blends until last summer. . . GLP Laurel Heights was the bait. Then I tried Telegraph Hill. . . I was in love. GLP Stratford is mellower version of Telegraph Hill. Both age incredibly.

As for that "prickly sensation" it obviously was the ketchup they used in their blends !! Sad day in the tobacco world since they closed up shop !

Haha yep, I always smelled the ketchup too. I agree it's sad they're gone though... I know their Virginias were beloved by many. I personally loved the Frogs, Blue Mountain and a couple others :-(.

I spent well over 20 years staying away from VA blends due to yhe face melting effect they had on me. It wasn't untill 2 years ago that i found it was specifically RED VA that did that to me. So when i want to try a VA blend i ask the very knowledgeable membership here about the RED content in a blend and if it is low i wll give it a try. It has opened up many new blends for me!

However after giving it a try and you don’t like it just let me know and I’m reasonably sure we can work out a sale or trade. AJ
