This review is based on a sample from a generous friend. The dark brown flakes can be smoked as is, but I recommend setting them aside for about an hour.
Upon lighting, I sense nuts, wood, a light amount of smokiness, molasses and some cocoa. While the pleasant sweet molasses is present throughout the bowl, it takes a backseat to the nutty taste. It’s also mildly spicy.
ABF burns slow, so set aside at least an hour plus. It’s never harsh, even with quick puffing. It smokes well in cobs and briars, though a wide bowl works best to bring out its flavour.
It’s almost full in body, but can be smoked anytime of day. The nicotine level is between medium and strong. Pay attention to your puffing. If the bowl gets warm, put the pipe down, unless you enjoy an all out nicotine assault.
Some say Aged Burley Flake is the benchmark by which all burleys are measured against. While I disagree, I can say with certainty it’s one of the best burleys currently available, maybe the best.

One of my favorites, for sure!
Which Burley would you pick as more of a "benchmark"?

Thanks for the review Sam. I agree with your assessment. The only thing I can add is that I rub the flakes out pretty good and maybe give it about ten minutes before lighting. I do a charring light and let it sit for a few more minutes and then light it up. Burns great for me like that. It is a truly superior burley.

Thanks Sam. Great work. I agree this one is full bodied Burley. It's tasty but I'm kind of a wimp so I normally water it down with a little bit of Cavendish which also satisfies my sweet tooth as well so it's win/win. I do the same with Wessex Burley Slice and, splitting hairs, ABF is the stronger of the two to my tastes. Both are excellent offerings.
I prefer Uhle's 00, Perfection Plug and 300 to the flakes but the cellar is low on the latter two of those and robust on both ABF and Wessex Burley Slice so I'll make due with the flakes and some Cavendish at this point. It's a first world issue for sure.

Thanks @10furlongs donDarin I really can’t say. When I think of Benchmark, its something beyond excellence. If I may use a baseball analogy, Willie Mays. Maybe ABF is the Willie Mays of burleys? I’ll have to do more research. I’ve never smoked any of the Uhle burleys. How do they compare?

Secondly, Perfection Plug and 300 are cube cuts which some don't believe burn evenly. I've never had that issue. Gravity feed in a cob and good to go. It's pretty mindless. 00 is probably the most popular of the three. It's somewhat of a shaq cut and quite excellent but lighter to my palate than the flakes. I don't add anything to any of these offerings.

Great review Sam, it’s one of my favorite Burley’s, definitely the benchmark of an outstanding burley. However, kind of expensive to smoke on a daily basis. I have MANY other Burley tobacco’s I enjoy as well. I guess you’ve noticed now a days I lean more towards burley tobacco’s. Unless I open a well aged Virginia, for some reason fresh Virginia blends now have a tendency of giving me a tongue bite, as I got older this started. I too find it smokes best and much more enjoyable in a wide bowl, burns slow and cool with maybe one re-light. It’s Sunday so after dinner I think I’ll enjoy a bowl👌👍👍

Another great review Sam, spot on and thanks for taking the time to do them.
ABF is right up there with my all time favorite burleys. I gravitate towards heavier burleys and this one ticks all the boxes.
If you're looking for burley review fodder, C&D Burley Flake #1 and #3 are also high on my burley list.

I have several tins aging. Happy days ahead for you young man.....enjoy👌👍. I too have a few, I noticed it has been much harder to find, so once Smokingpipes had it back on the shelf I spent my months budget for tobacco’s and ordered 6 tins, gave one to a friend even less fortunate as myself. Put a BIG smile on his face, well worth it. Plus I have another put aside for him for the holidays 👌👍👍

Again, this is one that I can purchase over here. So thank you, Sam, for giving another review of something that I can get.
You're not choosing blends for me, but I'm grateful nonetheless.
