I've tried to think of a comparitive to help
determine what types of tobaccos new smokers should look
for that might appease their tastes.Steak I believe
is a good choice for this. You have different grades
of meat, different cuts, and different methods of
preperation and serving.
A "Grade A" cut could be compared to cigarettes.
Edible but needs seasoning and flavoring to be
enjoyable.(I myself love meatloaf)The tobacco in
cigarettes is blended bleached,processed and
flavored.(and still can taste like wood ash)
((I smoke cigarettes,so I'm speaking from
expierience))
"Choice" cuts could be compared to cigars.
Most are natural leaf, but some have been
infused (flavored).You have different
varities combinded to give differing
flavors and strengths.
"Prime" cuts for pipe tobacco, simply put
the blenders use the highest quality leaf
in order to get consistant blends.
Now here is where it gets tricky. If you like
your steak straight forward,minimal seasoning
and no sauce, you are quite probably drawn to
Burley forward blends. If you're one that
marinades your meat,A Va/Per or straight
Virginia. Some using A1 quite likely will
enjoy the aromatics,a little bit of sweetness.
Heinz 57 would probably lean towards Perique
heavy blends.
Now this is by no means a scientific study
of any sort.Just a simple musing to help
me try to help new pipe smokers.Basicly
I try to identify their taste preference
in foods,to make suggestions as to blends
to try.

Very nicely done, I figured that’s where your steak sauce poll was leading too, simply brilliant. With me your absolutely correct...I chose NO steak sauce and I’m definitely a Burley forward pipe smoker. Let’s see who else chimes in on this and what their sauce/no sauce proves or not.
PS But I do smoke many types of tobacco’s but Burley blends are my favorite 👌👍

I firmly believe in trying new tastes in foods as well as tobaccos.I still like Burleys but have an extreme Love for oriental/english blends. And a touch of Perique makes any smoke better.

That's a fantastic analogy. I can certainly relate. I've no idea about quality of leaf in cigars but I get the distinctions. Nicely done, Matthew.

About two years ago @chico and I had the opportunity to interact with a Master Blender. That and a bit of research into blending tobaccos keep popping up with foods when I am trying to explain "Tastes" to new smokers. So I thought a quick question to a more experienced crowd would help. Experienced smokers will quite normally have a more diverse palate, but the basic "goto" blends will appeal to their favorite tastes in foods.I hoped that Steak would be a definitive example.

I think your analogy and explanation makes sense. I like minimal seasoning on good steaks. More sauces or flavoring on lesser grades of meat. I have the same preference when eating fish. I enjoy the clean straightt flavor and texture of many varieties of fish when served raw or seared. I am a sashimi addict. If it was cheap, I would eat it every day. Similarly, I enjoy straight burley and burley forward blends. Virginia too. I don't avoid aromatics by any means, they have their place in my cellar and I see them almost as dessert. When I am in the mood for smoked fare, it is an English, Balkan or Oriental. Perique reminds me a bit of malt vinegar, or a fermented sauce. Viewing it as a condiment for Virginia makes sense; kind of like a rich barbeque sauce or rub on pork or brisket.

Now it makes sense. I was a salt and pepper only person, never any sauce. I am yet to try a burley forward blend, but I have some in the mail. Englishes are my go to and I dont see myself pulling away from them. I have a few aro's, with more on the way also, but they don't get smoked very often.
I like my unadultered steak and the same with my tobacco.

The hardest part is to keep the questions seperate. Now I might well enjoy a seasoned grilled steak but Bacon belongs on a plate not in my pipe.I don't like super sweet blends but love cotton candy. So the analogy doesn't work for all foods or treats but seems to work well comparing to steak.I Thank all who have participated and hope that in some way my musings might help each of you on your journey. I will now be returning to my regularly sceduled "Tin Cap" endeavors.Conspiracies to conspire. Cheers !!

Speaking of that, I got lost on YouTube last night for 3 hours watching videos about "planet x." Even watched a video about the reptilian race taking over in the near future.
Back to the thread... a steak would be splendid right now, instead it's some thrown together "sloppy joes."

You sound like Star Trek fan.In the second installment of the Reboot, Kirk and McCoy are running from the locals and Spock is descending into a volcano.Did you catch the name of the Planet? Nibiru,or if I remember correctly "Planet X".

Yes its Nibiru. Supposedly with a brown dwarf star and a few moons. The Anunnaki are going to return with it as well!

For those who are interested,I'm not trying to compare steak to tobacco.more so I'm comparing the seasoning or toppings that are prefered. Look at how you like your steak,a little salt and pepper or topped with a sauce. Is the sauce sweet or spicy? Now look at your favorite tobacco blends. Are they blended tobaccos, are they lightly cased or flavored?Or do you like the fruitier topped blends. What I'm surmising is that people who enjoy their steak with simple salt and pepper, are more likely going to enjoy a burley or VaBur blend with little or no flavoring, just the different blends bringing out a different flavor.People who like a sweet sauce will be drawn to the fruitier aromatics. I'm just trying to formulate a different approach to the request of "What blends should I try". I could be,and probably am full of poop. But I'm just trying to find way to help new pipe smokers other than just sending them to the shops.

Im a simple steak fellar and smoke everything. Although, I consume more burley than I probably should.
