Well, last night was yet another night of no sleep but I was feeling good enough to restore a pipe I had been putting off for a while, needed some tender loving care. This is a 1944 Lord Davenport Algerian Apple pipe. Only four different shapes were released by this short lived name/manufacturer, I have one example of each shape, one day soon I will be restoring another. This Apple bowl pipe has a special “ push stem “ which now works properly, it’s called the “ non-clogging", and "non-juicing" stem system. It’s purpose is to keep the draft open and clean, it actually does an excellent job at that. Took roughly 2.5 hours but it turned out too also be time well spent. I’m very pleased with the outcome and one day I may light-er up!?!? The silver band and two silver stars inlayed in the stem makes the pipe come together and shows off the color and grain of the briar👌👍👍 All work was done in my room on a work table I have set up, did most of the restoration within a box I designed to keep the dust and debris contained in a small area. Tools used: Dremel with the long flexible extension, four differ buffing wheels, 2 different grits of micro mesh, over an hour and a half of just hand work. A compound called Tormex to clean and give the stem a nice finish/shine. The White Diamond and Carnauba Wax I used really brought out the beautiful color of the briar, no dye was needed.

Nice job! Looks great. Bet it smokes good too. Maybe one day I’ll pack this pipe with Marlin Flake and see how good it smokes. For now it’s a pipe for me to just admire for a month or two. Appreciate your comment, thank you.

Nice work, enjoy. I have a soft spot for Orphan pipes and like seeing them saved. Appreciate your comment, I too have a soft spot for older orphan Pipes in need of restoration. Something that was taught to me by my grandfather, he’s missed dearly. Pipes were his passion in life and could he sit down and tell some stories while enjoying a bowl of Granger, his favorite tobacco. PS Please don’t PM me and ask if I’d sell it, this particular pipe would never be sold. Plus I’ve never sold pipes on any forum, if anything I’ve gufted a number away. I’m not here to sell, nor have I ever sold an item on any pipe forum. I was once accused of “ building my post count so you can make money here “. Well, some of you know me well and that’s not in my personality. Since 2011, being retired/disabled all I have is extra time on my hands. When I was healthy and worked/traveled I rarely had time to sit. Now I relax and take my life day by day and if not listening to music I’m on here, not much of a TV person. So now maybe y’all will understand me a little better. It’s a pleasure being here and I’ve also had the pleasure of meeting a bunch of wonderful people, Amen to that!!!

Nice work, Ted. That is a really classy pipe. Thanks for the tip about Tormex. I will look for that. Really appreciate your comment. You’ll find Tormex on Amazon at a reasonable price. It’s a paste that you squeeze from a tube, use sparingly. I’ve used it for years on many Knife blades for a lasting shine and protection. It’s also great to use a dab on a leather strop to give a knife a razor like edge with an outstanding shiny smooth finish. So, one day I decided to use the paste on a stem I was restoring, because of the extremely fine grit in the paste the outcome was more than expected. A lot better for me than using oxi-clean or baking powder, much less elbow grease is required. You’ll really enjoy working with Tormex, good luck.

Will Tormex work with hand buffing or is a wheel required?

Will Tormex work with hand buffing or is a wheel required? Since Tormex has a fine grit to the paste I only use it with hand buffing/ finishing on soft materials. Buffing wheels might remove material if your not super careful/cautious. Would definitely burn vulcanite/ ebonite stems if used on a buffing wheel. I have used Tormex to highly polish certain knife blades with two types of buffing wheels. Takes a bit of time but the end results are worth it. Good luck👌👍

Here’s a picture I just took with my iPad. This tube I’ve been using for almost 2 years, so use sparingly. Best used with old cut up towels....aka Terry Cloth.
