Ha! Good morrow to antb whenever he gets in here. , that last update I got was in the middle of the day and I figured a half hour. Needed my PC back in 45 minutes. When I clicked Update and Restart it said, this one will take a while. 3 hours. I do have other equipment, just not here and easy to use. I was able to shut off updates going into regedit, but I think MS figured me out and changed permissions.

Windows 10 had a major update and if your upload speeds are poor it will take a long time. But this was a big package/update to install and that took roughly an hour. Depending on your processor speed and cache and how much ram is installed on you PC. Last night my daughter sent me a text crying the blues! I told her go online with your tablet because you have a 4 year plus old Hp with a slow AMD processor and only 4 gigs of ram. Low and behold it took her laptop 3 hrs. & 47 minutes. So, you did okayđź‘Ť Microsoft had a BIG security update due to a possible breach, your safe now so have fun!!!

Just be glad that you weren't work on a job with a deadline. I used to keep spare Win 7 machines for the women in the office for when these updates happened. I remember one in the middle of W2 season that lasted 4 hours. Win 10 sucketh.

Do a Google search and print out the comman prompts so you have control over your Windows PC. That’s why I run Linux on my server and my laptop.. I’m done with Microsoft, Widows XP Pro and Windows 7 running in XP mode you had more control over your PC. Now Microsoft servers are constantly monitoring your PC, wether you like it or not. You either live with it or learn Linux, because Mac/Apple IOS is even more proprietary!

I have the week off spending most of it with my bedridden sister, and she is very thrilled that I came to see her. ALS is really doing a number on her, and it is sad to see such a rapid degeneration take place. Spiritually, she is in a good place and at peace about her situation.
I packed about 10 pounds of tobacco’s, pipes and accessories for my nephew, son of my brother that has expressed an interest in pipe tobacco, and really liked the small amount I gifted him in the past. The kid about crapped his pants when he opened the box... tomorrow, I am going to talk to have a pipesmoking 101 session with him. He is a reflectful meditative sort, a really deep thinker for his age, who had a less than ideal start in life.
A very pleasant 85 degree night smoking some Strang in a Peterson Aran.

Charlie, I wish you and your sister a very happy and pleasant visit together. Spend as much time as you can with her while visiting, go for a ride, ask her what she’d like to do! I went through something similar with a loved one just over 3 years ago, it’s heart wrenching for family members but even more-so for your sister. She sounds like a strong willed positive lady which is a big plus. Glad she’s in good spirits and may God Bless you both. Your a good man Charlie Brown

Thanks for the kind words, she can barely make it to the bathroom so going for a ride and doing anything is out of the picture. She married a very good man that took his wedding vows seriously, 23 of the 41 years they have been married, he has aided her in serious health issues, one after another....the guy is a rock, small in stature but a great man. That is very gratifying to see as her brother.
Having a great visit, but it is going to be heartbreaking to go home and say my goodby to her on an earthly level, but I can also say “I will see you later” though.

Good Morning to you FYI, Microsoft usually performs their updates on Wednesdays at various times. It's still Tuesday at the time of this post on the West coast, so I'm sure something will come our way in the next two hours or so...

I hated when MS did those updates at the stupidest times without asking. I don't have those bothers now, but I feel your pain. Sorry to hear about your sister, trailboss. She sounds like she's got a solid husband and brother. You'll get your reward later.

In Windows, you can set the automatic update time frame so it does it overnight when you're sleeping. That way you're never bothered, unless you left something important open and it reboots on you.

That you can do if you leave your PC on, but I recommend you make sure you have no other programs running and if you’ve been working on a document or presentation make sure you save your data. I never would recommend leaving a PC running without being monitored or leaving a hard drive hibernate. Your much more vulnerable of being hacked through port 80 if your network is not secured, and I mean a 256 bit encryption. Servers run 2048 bit SSL certificates.......much safer. Oh, it’s a joy! That’s why I use Linux for a number of years.

Window 10 is more secure.....even though their servers are constantly communicating with your PC. The GUI ( graphic user interface ) is much more user friendly for those not experienced using a computer, oh...there are many still that are clueless when it comes to using a computer !!! Windows 8 users should be able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free, just make sure you back up your data on a cloud service and an external hard drive/flash drive prior to the upgrade. My daughter’s older Hp laptop runs much better with Windows 10. Oh, I despise Windows 8, Windows XP Pro and Windows 7 running in XP mode was Microsoft’s best operating systems....JMHO.

I am happy with Windows 7. My Dell Optiplex 330 is about 12+ years old and laboring. I guess those Intel Core 2 Dual Processors are wearing out. I would like to find a tech who can install a new motherboard so I can keep the old unit running. The hard drive was replaced a few years ago. I do not need a more "modern" system.

If I lived near you I would be happy to replace the motherboard, Dell does not make them like they use to! I would also use a program called “ True Image “ and this way you would have a new hard drive as well and keep the old one wrapped up as a backup, just in case of a disaster. True Image will make an “ exact duplicate image “ of your old hard drive, then that image would be installed on your new hard drive. The exact motherboard must be used or your PC will “ post “ but will not boot to Windows, it will just keep re-cycling.

Our office ran Win 7 as long as possible. MS has been trying to force businesses into ponying up for their very expensive desktop management software and a subscription plan for all of their software. Easy payment plan, nothing down and easy monthly payments for the rest of your life. My main issue with Win 10 is not being able to control the updates, along with being very difficult to manage.

You said it best.....it’s all about MS and making BIG bucks on businesses!

What a touching thing to see in this shallow age of ours. It sounds as if your family has their collective heads screwed on straight. And, you all have the right attitudes towards this, if I may say so. May this go as well as can be hoped for and that no one lets the worst day define the rest of their life.
