Anyone have an idea of what "Old Toby" might be? I have my own ideas. What are yours?

Anyone have an idea of what "Old Toby" might be? I have my own ideas. What are yours? Well, it’s one of two things.....either an old guy/dog named Toby or a tobacco blend from the Middle Earth Pipeweed Series sold online from 2 retailers that I know of, never smoked it but I’ve read reviews and gets some very positive one’s 👍

If it pertains to this forum, it has most likely been mentioned above. Outside the forum, Old Toby could be anything from Pikee Queenah, the war chief of the Tuziyammo band of Western Shoshone and a Shoshone dog soldier who died in 1858, to the name of a particular Cannabis strain

I've always thought that "Toby" was short for tobacco, so "Old Toby" was simply aged tobacco.

Caricature Jugs from England. Yup, and the Toby 3-D plates as well. I had one years ago purchased from The Bradford Exchange. What a gimmick that turned out to be!

Anyone have an idea of what "Old Toby" might be? I have my own ideas. What are yours? One of my daughters once had a cat she named “Toby”. Years later as the cat aged he was often referred to as “Old Toby”. Somehow I don’t believe his fame was very widespread. In answer to your question, I haven’t a clue. Herbindave’s responce, “Caricature Jugs from England” reminds me of an episode of Antiques Roadshow from England where I believe the term was assigned to a Caricature Jug. My memory isn’t what it used to be so please don’t hold me to this. AJ

...plates and jugs are fine, but I was referring to the tobacco mentioned in LOTR... What are your ideas, DT? I'm not sure exactly where you were going with this and there are a number of ways to approach the question. I'm a fan of LOTR, but am no expert. I'm also interested in J.R.R. Tolkien in general, but again, no expert. Anyway, you've peaked my interest.

Tolkien himself says it's lost to history. He said people would ask him to fill in gaps in his Middle Earth history and he said he was fine with not knowing; that's how real history works.

No answer, just reflecting over a pipeful that evening...

Hobbits would want to smoke something proper and reliable, something like Southfarthing Standard Mixture. Think meat and potatoes, not caviar and snails.

Elves and Dragons? I says to 'im. Elves and Dragons! Cabbages and potatoes are more for the likes of me and you.
Only a foreigner would call a hobbit a halfling. A hobbit's tobacco would be comforting and reliable, not at all adventurous, practical and dependable, proper-like and respectable. There has never been a more hobbit-like named tobacco than Standard Mixture. It would be smoked in a plain, hand-carved wooden pipe, from whatever wood was available, in the the standard shapes, and absolutely no freehands.
Tain't natural, and trouble will come of it.

Some years back, it was mentioned that Brian Levine at the time worked for Peter Stokkebye delivered Stokkebye Nougat to the film crew for the LOTR movies under Peter Jackson. That might qualify for Old Toby. pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/peter-stokkebye-nougatBut then again, Tolkien was a Capstan smoker so I can imagine that would be the blend he had in mind.

Anyone not from the Shire. I mean, not just queer, like the folks who live right agin' the Old Forest and go boating on the big river, (which ain't natural), but someone from foreign parts [waves hand], over there. I hear there's some strange folks, and stranger lands.
PS Tolkien was one of the Big Folk, and not a hobbit, and his choice of Capstan may have seemed odd to them.

I doubt Old Toby was growing more than one type of tobacco, so it was probably a single strain that he and his family had perfected over generations.
I'm gonna go with something like semois: earthy, simple, and delicious.

Probably something akin to pure Semois.

All I can tell you is that it’s one of my favorites. I was under the impression the Country Squire blended this themselves, but I’d love to know if there is another source-always have a backup.

The Country Squire's version of Old Toby is excellent and highly recommended, along with the rest of their Middle Earth series. Ill be ordering some today.
It may not have been what Old Toby actually smoked (which was probably some of JRRs Capstan) but it is darn good. So is Second Breakfast.

Last July, when I posted this, I was unaware of the existence of a tobacco called "Old Toby"... or maybe it's been devised since the original post. In any event, I will have to try some.

Anyone liking Country Squire Old Toby, Rivendell, and Second Breakfast should smoke some C&D Autumn Evening as a Middle Earth Tobacco and rename it. It's got maple and smoked log balance. I know it's a popular tobacco, but has not been mentioned for a while... and I am enjoying a bowl presently
