First try of this Rimboche S.J. from Daughters & Ryan.
Three bowls in a row. This is very tasty. More importantly, it is very interesting. I guess that is what I liked about it. It is very interesting. Spices and what not, complicated. Strong, rich. Like an orchestra more than a band.
I am not good at putting it into words, but I like it.
its like an exotic vacation, a tour of a new city. I am not sure I want to live here, but I will visit often.

After I wrote that i found a review and wow they get fancy with the descriptions. I also disagree. In the review it claims the tobacco is light and mild. I do not find it that way. At all.
Years ago I took a one day course in wine tasting. I learned a lot about what to look for and what to call it. It would be valuable for me to take such a course in pipe tobacco.

So I would say that Billy Budd Blonde is the tobacco I smoke while in my pajamas. Either late at night, early in the morning, or when I can't sleep. It is intimate and comforting and I imagine that it knows me. Like my OSC (over stuffed chair), my great old coffee cup.
The Rimboche S.J. is like going out on a date with someone fascinating. Interesting, and not just because its new. Perhaps more formal, or at least not quite intimate. Not sure if I want this tobacco to see me in my thread bare bathrobe, my hair all ahoo and ahay, and my twice repaired coffee mug. Do I want to take it home? All I know is I want to see it again.

LOL I suppose. I just put down what I know about. I know how I feel. I know how i feel more than I know if its grass, or hay, or pepper, that I taste.
The only tobacco type that I seem to be able to identify correctly is latakia, and I don't care for it much when it predominates.

It's one of my favorite D&R blends. Well worth smoking.

There is a little bricks and morter about an hour and twenty minutes away. They sell mostly cigars to college kids, roll-yer-own cigarette tobacco and papers to folks who for what ever reason don't smoke "ready mades", and lottery tickets. They have a display of zippo lighters, a display of not very interesting pipes, a great amount of OTC pipe tobacco, and a few tins of mostly Peterson and Samuel Gawith blends. I road trip out there once in a while and this time they had a single tin of this Rimboche S.J. and a single MacBarren Seven Seas. I bought them both, along with several boxes of Carter Hall. The guy behind the counter knows next to nothing about cigars or pipes, but he knows how to run the register, and sell the cigarette tobacco blends.
They have one standing table with a single bar stool, which is just about the only place in the whole town where you are allowed to smoke. There is often someone sitting there smoking his cigarettes while drinking something out of a bag.
Ah well, they are open.
I didn't expect much from this Rimboche S.J. but was very pleasantly surprised. I have since called Pipes and Cigars and got a few tins as I am going to finish this one off pretty soon.

It's much cheaper if you buy it in the one pound bag.

I should, at some point, get going on the bulk buying.
I have been working the in lab the last couple of weeks, where I obviously can't smoke, and it is such a joy to come home to a pink can of Riboche SJ. I bet it is getting almost as much smoke time as my beloved Billy Budd Blonde.

Billy Budd Blonde is still the one I smoke in my bathrobe when i wake up.
Once dressed I might get out the S.J. or some other goodies. What I am saying is that Rimboche SJ is like a recipe you get on line and try out. You love it so much you make some more and some more.
Billy Budd Blonde is like your Cheerios and milk in the morning, it is reliably great in that intimate way, like your bedroom slippers, not trying to impress you, more to support you as being one of those constants that make the world real.

In the same vein as the Rimboche, I very highly recommend the Daughter's and Ryan TAPS VIP (my favorite D&R)... sweet, spicy, and satisfying... available in tins only (flavorful toppings really make this one special). And if you want an amped up version of all that Rimboche flavor, with a good nic kick, try the D&R Picayune. Check out the reviews first if hesitant to dive in. Enjoy!
