Well there are all kinds of collectors too. Like, for instance, I'd consider you a collector if you just wanted a bent bowl made by every British, Irish, and European pipe maker possible. You don't necessarily need to have all the shapes and sizes, colours, etc, to be a collector.
That said, I am no collector. I just couldn't afford it. On Christmas and on my birthday I buy myself a nice pipe from Peterson and that is about all. Peterson has been making some more affordable lines lately which has helped me out a lot. But to be honest, after smoking for 15 years, I just climbed out of Dr. Grabows and no-name Polish pipes like 5 years ago.

Every collector starts as an accumulator. I've been at it for over 30 years and many of the accumulated pipes and early collections have gone help fiance the Castello collection that has gotten some good reviews and respect within the active hobby. The collection has grown since it was last shown in 2015. I am as passionate about the hobby as I've ever been.
That's really a great collection, but maybe a little bit insane 😉. I am jealous of course. With your last name you should dump all these and start over with Peterson. 😎

I keep trying to collect tobacco, but my collection keeps going up in smoke.

I have decided, now that I have between 60 and 70 pipes, that i am done accumulating. Even stopped perusing the pipe porn at the on line pipe shops.
What i would like to collect, and it is much harder, is a bunch of friends with whom to smoke.

It's too early to tell what I'm doing. Over the past 4-5 years I have accumulated > 100 at various auctions and sellers I trust. Since then, I have given away most to all of them to the Troops overseas.
Now I am in process of reversing to a smaller number, only keeping the ones that are special.
I'm also trying to get out of the volume mindset. I am going to commission 1-2 pipes a year and sell off what I don't want. KISS method.

Thank you AJ, your much too kind but, I can't afford my pipes. I wish I could. You make some of the most beautiful pipes, I've ever seen. They are not expensive, but pipes don't have to be expensive, before I can't afford them.
I have to agree. I'd love to have one of Ron's pipes...wish I could afford one. But I can't and I'll be content to look at other folks RD Pipes.

I will admit that I have a thing for old 4 digit Kaywoodies, but I have been pretty good about no going overboard as is my habit. I have about a dozen old Kaywoodies, but I could easily go nuts, if I don't watch myself.

All it takes is initiative and patience. The Arizona Pipe Club is not very big when measured against some of the others, but starting a website and Facebook page has helped a lot, and indeed, it does take time, but we are seeing that it is paying off. Even if it takes a couple years of a few guys consistently getting together, it is fun... there is no substitute for face to face interaction.....speaking from experience.

.. there is no substitute for face to face interaction.....speaking from experience. Its true. I mean smoking has traditionally been both social and solitary. Well enough with the solitary for a while.
