On a not too distant PM podcast, a guest stated that (in his opinion) there is a difference between the two. A true collector might look for Kaywoodies between 1926 and 1953, and even have sub-categories like straight blliards, bent billiards, etc....
I profess, I am an accumulator. I lack the desire, or the drive....and if I did spend like a true collector might possibly, I would have a hard time ensuring domestic tranquility on the homefront. I pretty much buy what I want to smoke even if they are collectable, but I do have a few out of production pipes that remain unsmoked...not sure why.
I can appreciate those that are true collectors though.

Every collector starts as an accumulator. I've been at it for over 30 years and many of the accumulated pipes and early collections have gone help fiance the Castello collection that has gotten some good reviews and respect within the active hobby. The collection has grown since it was last shown in 2015. I am as passionate about the hobby as I've ever been.

In close to 50 years of enjoying a pipe I’ve accumulated over 200 plus pipes, don’t care to count and get myself sick...lol. A few I either sold or gifted, it was getting out of hand. I keep the 30 plus pipes that are worth a few bucks in my safe, all unsmoked and are extremely collectibles. My daughter knows what to do with them when the time comes. With all the pipes I do smoke I can’t see me lighting up a rare pipe that’s 75 plus years old in unsmoked condition. Some might say “ smoke’m “, but right now I’d much rather look at them at times..

Now that...is a collection....Badass! I like the case for the show, I hate hearing stories of pipes disappearing from tables.

I think there might be a little collector in all of us, even if we are predominantly accumulators.
For example, even if there has been no system to their purchases a lots of folks display their pipes, which to my mind is collector type behavior. I dunno.

I never made it to the collector level. That's quite a unique classification in my book. I was primarily a hoarder on the pipe side. TAD is another question. My briar collection has been cut in half the last couple years, shedding more than buying these days. I have a couple left which are collector worthy; however, the majority of those are gone now. I'm just a smoker these days enjoying a rather robust cellar in the remaining pipes which have been time proven good smokers.

I'm a accumulator, I've pared down my collection of Comoys by giving them to a good friend, keepin the love going. Hope he gets another 50 years out of them.

I tend to agree with Mark's comments. I have some very nice pipes, but to consider myself a collector would be a little hifalutin'.

I collect and accumulate. I’ve accumulated more than two hundred pipes. Some are very special, those given to me by my friends, and I have a nice collection of Silver Spigots. Scattered among my pipes are some that I rarely smoke but I cannot bring myself to part with them. A few cost less than $20.00 and really don’t have much eye appeal. Why I have such a strong attachment to my pipes is a mystery and as recently as last week I considered thinning the herd. I can’t bring myself to do it.
Dramatwist: Being “hifalutin” is akin to bragging. My Dad often told me, “ If it’s fact it isn’t bragging.”

I'm an accumulating collector or a collecting accumulator or just a plain buyer of pipes.

At last count, I had 110 pipes with a few more at the back of a drawer somewhere, ( I've acquired 3 desks over the years ) in a desk, so I guess I'm an accumulator more than a collector. I have focused on a few marques over the 50+ years of smoking, mainly Charatan, but i don't consider myself a collector of this marque! If I see a pipe and it's a shape i like, a marque I'm familiar with and the price and my finances are right, I et it ! Not really the way of a collector as I understand it !!

I have..sadly none, but they really look nice, and I have always wanted to get one. I think we are due for a Silver Spigot / Military mount thread....no pressure mind you.

Having over 200 pipes I consider myself as a collector and I've ALWAYS been a collector of something. I don't go by rules by collecting only certain makers or styles although I do have quit a few that I can categorize as such. I collect what I LIKE and that has no bearing on value although I do have a great many that are of value and most the time of more value to me then monetary. An Accumulator sounds like someone who finds pipes some place in his home taking up precious space or what ever they accumulate unwilling like dust will accumulate under a bed if not swept out. If this is so I hope to accumulate many more pipes............I can't afford to purchase them anymore.

I'm an accumulator of pipes and tobacco. So they just show up under your bed and places unwilling? Gees! Sounds like a problem I could really get into.

That Castello collection is wondrous!
I'm a bit of both. I definitely started out as an accumulator, finding out what I liked and what I didn't like.
Since becoming enthralled by Barlings, I've mainly focused on that marque with slightly under 100 Barlings (or maybe slightly over 100 - I haven't counted in a couple of years) ranging over a century of production - 1872 thru circa 1970's. Nothing too fancy, well, maybe a few nice items, certainly nothing like the overall quality of that Castello collection or other collections that I've had the privilege to view privately. And, that's OK. I'm more than content with what I have and harbor no strong desire to add anything more. These days I'm just as happy with pictures of interesting Barling pipes since it's more about research than collecting.
There are also a few groupings made by artisan makers like Paul Tatum, Lee Von Erck, and Scottie Piersel. Overall, my collection is pretty small, and I expect that it will get smaller. I've been more focused on cellaring, and I'm pretty much done with that.

Your pipes look to be on par or better than most I see being produced today by anyone. AJ

Most definitely an accumulator. There's a propensity for Petersons, but nothing nearly as organized as a collection.

I mostly accumulate, but have begun to build a small collection of BBB, GBD and Brakners. I went through a Custombilt phase, but no longer have any. I would like to collect Comoy Blue Ribands too.
