I was just wondering how many of you have done this?
I'll be honest, the last time I was at an estate sale, I was kind of depressed by the whole idea of it. Here I was in this guys house, who died too young, first of all. Second, I was surrounded by things that interest me, which probably meant we would have been great friends. Old vinyl including big band jazz, 50s country, 60s rock and roll, Matchbox, Hot Wheels, Johnny walker cars, a really cool Ford Custom hot rod in the garage, and lots of civil war history things. I was a bit glad some of this stuff was getting a new home instead of going to a landfill, but it made part of me feel really glum inside at the same time.
I imagine I would probably feel the same way if I walked into the house of a former pipe smoker to buy pipes.
I guess this is one of the best ways to find deals however, as many times these youngins have no idea how much pipes can be worth. How did it make you feel? What were your finds?

Never a pipe at an actual Estate sale but the last “ Estate “ sale I was lucky enough to find 3 quart size jars of John Patton Forgotten Memories with no date. Purchased over 7 years ago and it was old then, now it’s well aged and outstanding. Only paid &5.00 a jar, what a deal👍

Unknown...nope...as odd as that may be, I've yet to find a pipe at an estate sale myself. Also, the junktique shops nearby rarely get a pipe in either.

An outstanding English blend that’s Burley forward instead of Virginia. The Virginia playes a role but in the background. I’d have no problem selling a well packed quart Mason jar for $65.00 today. So, yes $5.00 was a bargain and a great find as I’m one of those John Patton tobacco enthusiasts. Including one of my favorites, Storm Front. Also Crossroads, which now is no longer in production, I have 16 jars aging.

When I first began smoking pipes and knew almost nothing about it which is just a little less than I know now.I asked a fella in a smoke shop if he sold used pipes. He said the estate pipes are over there.I asked him who died..Actually I've never been to an estate sale.

Never been to an Estate Sale but in the mid 80s attended a farm auction in upper Ohio with the "former owners" standing by. Lots of community support, good deals and interesting items, picked up a Creek Chub Lure, hand crank corn husker and a large (18" dia) grind stone...foot powered. Overall a depressing event. Many locals were reluctant to bid at first, the owners stepped up and said the farm was gone regardless and sales would back a new start somewhere else and things started to sell better. A sad day.

..it's a term for "used pipes". Genuine estate sales are few and far between.

About 3 years ago I was over in a newer part of town and stopped at a "garage sale" where I found a 1950 patent Dunhill Tanshell Billiard and 3 unopened tins of 759 from the late '70s . All were owned by the grandfather of the lady who was having the sale and asked the lady "....how much for all these?" and she replied "well what will you give me?" I replied with and offer of $20.00 and she said "...they are yours" ! It's the only pipe & tobacco I've found at a "garage sale" though i don't stop at many as I've not found many pipes or tobacco related items at these here in my town.

So that made me curious. There were a few Petersons in there. No one in my family was thinking. I am still afraid to ask how much they sold for. I found one that survived in a box, luckily. The vulture took the other 20+ of them.

I am getting the impression you have some bad feelings about your grandfathers estate sale. That is fine and understandable but I would hesitate to lump everyone into the same boat. Some families might be thrilled to get any amount of money from some stinky old pipes. Otherwise, they would probably get tossed and lost forever.

I think a lot of pipes get thrown away when their owner dies. I would have no qualms about buying somebody's collection at an estate sale.

Not generally speaking, but in my case in particular. I know no one was thinking. Things were just sold in such a hurry. I wouldn't have sold them, I would have put them in my pipe rack

It’s usually done irrationally, later one might regret what/how a situation was properly dealt with, by then it’s to late. Most likely not done out of malice.

Oh yeah, I know, everyone was very apologetic. We hired a guy in to sell everything left in the house when the grandmother died, and no one was even thinking about those pipes. I think this kind of thing happens all of the time.
