I picked up a churchwarden for a really good price and the bowl I had this morning was rare bliss. Perfect the whole way.
my concern is this, my storage situation has me keeping my pipes in hiding and I'm wondering if removing the stem would affect the pipe, even if it's to get it to fit in a pouch.

I wouldn't make a habit of it. I have a 17" carved churchwarden that I have smoked one time. I did it for looks, but I was the only one in the room. If it's a briar I wouldn't do it. You can wreck cobs, too. Just not as easily. I say this as one who has busted a couple pipes trying to do the stem shimmy

That's my issue with church wardens. What I do is leave them at home and never take them out and about. That said, mine are cheap - a Mr. Brog and a MM Shire. So if they get damaged it's not the end of the world.

Clean the pipe and store it nice and neat in your underwear draw, donโt laugh it works for me placed directly against the back wall of the draw. Never an issue, I know where they are always. Also I made cloth pouches that protect the pipe ๐ ๐

I have a Vauen Nobile 177 and 277 pipe and a Vauen (forgot the name designation) 3672 churchwarden pipes. I do not recommend keeping the stem apart from the mortise to store it. I like lonecoyoty's idea of the underwear drawer. In the words of Gandalf: "keep it secret, keep it safe."
