I went to an event at the B&M last night and the Davidoff rep gave me a nice ball cap. This is what the industry has do to now since caps and shirts are considered advertisements. I'm going to leave the tag on to exhibit how silly things have become.

Actually, The FDA stated that pipes will not require a label, Ron. Because the ball cap is considered advertising is has a label. I'm leaving it on the cap.

Am I the only who thinks this makes sense? Keep in mind that for decades the tobacco industry utilized characters like Old Joe (aka Camel Joe) and it was discovered that children as young as six could identify Old Joe with Camel cigarettes as well as Disney logo with Mickey Mouse. That's powerful branding. I'm not saying that laws regarding smoking are fair, but I also think that people shouldn't be deluded into thinking that smoking is anything other than what it is: dangerous. Keep in mind that in 1949, Camel advertised that their brand was the number 1 brand among medical practitioners. The FDA is trying to combat over a century of cultural misinformation about smoking. I think people should be able to smoke if they so choose, but they should do it because they want to even though they are fully aware of the health risks. My thinking is "Let us smoke freely, but with our eyes wide open."

FQ, I don't disagree with your thoughts; however, thinking that a ball cap or T-shirt will compel someone to try a product is utter nonsense. The FDA has overstepped their charter and this is all about power. People are better educated about the risks of smoking, eating fast food and drinking sodas. We don't need warning labels on everything. The FDA's intent, in our case, is to put the pipe tobacco and cigar manufacturers out of business. They care little about the economic impact and act under the guise of protecting children. As for the advertising of Camel cigarettes in 1949 it just may be possible that more doctors smoked them than any other brand. Heck, I remember my dentist and family doctor smoking cigars in their offices. Times have changed and we're making informed decisions. We don't need tending from the FDA.

John, you are hereby known as the mad hatter!
I hear you, it is utterly ridiculous...in a sane society, prior to being tarred and feathered, and ran out of town on a rail, these bureaucrats and politicains should be branded on their foreheads: "Caution, this imbecile is dangerous to your personal liberty".

These distributors aren't giving these away out of the goodness of their hearts. LoL! Bitching about a free cap. Companies have gotten really cheap in the last few years. I'm surprised they were giving them away usually you need to buy a box to get anything. The last few in store cigar events all I got was a free stick of a low price line and a pitch to buy a box of the premium line. The warning labels have been on on any advertising going back at least to the Marlboro Miles days. This is nothing to to me.

I hear you, Dave, but this is the first time I've seen a label stitched to a cap. I think it's very funny and extremely irritating at the same time.

Kinda funny....I didn't read the op seeing it as bitching about receiving a free cap, I thought it was a criticism of idiotic regulatory rules....

Heck, maybe we all should wear a label "Screwing with my personal rights maybe will be hazardous to your health"...I have no real issue with some of the comments regarding personal responsibility regarding smoking...and I don't think children should consume tobacco products...and as the father to seven sons, ages 12 to 33, it is my responsibility as a parent to insist my children make wise decisions until they are capable adults...Fortunately, only one of my children "sneak smokes"...the rest don't like tobacco in any form. However, I don't like the government involved in my personal choices that I make as an adult...and agree with rdpipes, ...'Tampering with my personal rights will be hazardous to your health'. My pipe smoking started when I was 9 and I will celebrate 55 years of pipe smoking on June 19...I have never regretted it, and enjoy the solace it has provided me over the years...and I'm damn glad I was raised during a time when no real laws prevented me from developing and enjoying my passion for the pipe... ...just my .02...

Well said, Peter. I didn't intend to stir up a political hornet's nest (well, almost) I just wanted t point out how far the lunacy has gone. When people tell me that smoking is bad for me I tell them so is not minding your own business. I've really turned into a cranky old bastard.

Fortunately, enough folks put a stop to this rather quickly... ...again, just my .02...

Here in Wisconsin with little interest generated on our side we managed to keep cigar shops and lounges smoke friendly. Even the Tavern League caved when they leveled the playing field to no smoking in any workplace. .... speaking of the lunacy, as I read it a large percentage of the latest couple of generations of pipe and cigar board guys that come and go whine about losing their freedoms while these poor saps are relegated to their patio's and garages to "enjoy a pipe" to save their loved one's from the dreaded fumes. I've even seen a couple of guys posting pictures of sheds they sit in and are congratulated by the brownies for have such a great spot.

Sheez man! I thought it was just a sticker! You mean it is sown on to the cap?!!
By the way the madness continues: I believe the antis are asking Govt to provide them with a date as to when the last tobacco harvest in the USA will be allowed!!!
What has this world come to?

It's my considered opinion that this incessant assault with weaponized "health" warning labels is impacting our subconscious and can spark a psychosomatic reaction detrimental to our health. The power of their suggestibility can spark a cancerous growth in our bodies. Labels Kill. Labels Are Known To Cause Cancer. Ban Labels.
