Early bedtime, but you all know I love the Matches, at least zambini knows. Here's a quick list of the Matches I like: Nightcap: As good or better than the original Hickory: Similar, a little fruitier than original VIP: Nothing like original, which is definitely Birch. Match is Cocoa. It's still really good Ready Rubbed: As everyone else says Holiday: JimInks says good match, and from memory I believe so, too. Great English with American Nuances Brindley's: Pretty close to the original, with age might be exact. Very nice blend with a tiny sweet top surprise Briggs: Also very close. It's full of flavor for a simple blend Country Doctor: Seldom in stock, though some old tins are available at Iwan Reis (I bought two, myself). Totally great. This is one Jim recommended by phone. I didn't think it would be up my alley, but some months later when I saw it in tins I went ape. Cannot say enough good about it Match Amphora is really close. Not in rotation, as I haven't had enough of the original or Match to decide Field and Stream: Jim's review has the best comparison, but the Match is really well done with a warning: It just may not be your cup of tea Model: It's burley. It's good, but there are better burleys out there. Sutliff J4 Burley, Uhle's Burley Revelation: This is a really nice, warm and mild American English. Has a topping that brings the tobaccos together Match Bourbon Street: IMO very close to original, but less fragrant in a good way Sugar Barrel: Pretty nice, but with all the above tobaccos this is not in regular rotation. When I come across the tub I light one up Match Walnut: Nice, a notch above Sugar Barrel Match Carter Hall/H&H Chatham Manor - - - - Stick to Carter Hall for better taste and to keep it in business Prince Albert: Better than Match Carter Hall... and may be better than original Troost, John Rolfe, Argosy: None of these impressed me, but the Argosy has a nice pouch note. I don't want to condemn these as I bought small samples. That's usually a mistake. I now always buy at least 4 ounces of any tobacco to get a better cross section of flavor This is why I love this forum. You guys are priceless.

In terms of original vs. match, I've only tried both versions of Presbyterian. Match Presbyterian may light a little different, smell a little different, and has trouble finishing out the bottom of the bowl without losing flavor but it reaches the heights of Presbyterian 80% of the time whilst costing a third of the price and at a somewhat regular availability.
I'm a firm believer in Match Holiday. For those that aren't regular aromatic smokers, it manages to be different without being too different although it is sweet. It's better than Sutliff RR to my palate.

I’ve never tried Match Holiday but I really enjoy Sutliff RR Match on the dry side....with 2 plus years of aging👍 If fresh needs to be air dried and is an enjoyable smoke👌👍

Anyone liking Match RR should give Holiday and Revelation Match a tryout. I find all 3 to be complimentary and will smoke one after another.

I know, *we* generally say things like "well, it's not a good as the original" but something crossed my mind as I'm thinning out my cellar and pipe accumulation: I'm pleased that manufacturers are attempting to replicate well-loved blends from the past, even though they may not live up to our memories of those blends. ...kind of like old girlfriends... "I know they'll never match my sweet little imagination..." That’s the funniest line I’ve heard all week!

It makes lighting those chunks so much easier.

@cosmicbobo I know how you go ga-ga over the Match blends. I think the only who enjoys them more than you is peterd-Buffalo Spirit who buys them by the pound!

That's some list, @cosmicbobo . I'm not that long in the tooth with respect to my pipe smoking life that I need to worry about matches. I'll come back when they try to match the match. Just don't become a maniac like me.

@cosmicbobo I know how you go ga-ga over the Match blends. I think the only who enjoys them more than you is peterd-Buffalo Spirit who buys them by the pound! Last week 2 MORE pounds of Sutliff ERR Match was delivered. I smoked a bowl fresh, had to keep lighting. Next bowl I let air dry for a bit over an hour, made a big difference. I jarred most and left about 3 oz in an open tray. I checked it less then an hour ago and still moist. I mix well with a clean toothpick. I do have ERR Match from 2/16 I’ve also been enjoying, the 2 years plus also makes a difference. With ALL the new blends hitting the market last minute to “ suck “ up as much revenue as possible, I believe the ONLY 2 blends I might want more of jarred is ERR Match & Amphora Original with some aging👌👍👍 I’m done with trying new tin tobacco’s!!!

Tried two match blends of Flying Dutchman. One from P&C was closer than one from Coj Neither as good as the original, but then my taste memory has changed a bit over the years. Would I buy it again....probablyP&C version. Your mileage may vary, use only as directed. Significate penalty for early withdrawal. Sorry senior radio moment.

These are sort of matches since C&D has made Kramer's for a while. I have a question I hope someone can answer:
Kramer's is now in bulk. How long has this been going on? If for a while, I can't believe I didn't notice it sooner

I guess I wasn't looking for it when I looked at the list of bulk brands. I want to try the house mixture. Like coffee blends, House and Breakfast Blends are usually very good

In the limited circle I travel in some folks like Russ Ouellettes Match Blends. Dave, what is your opinion of P & C Match Sugar Barrel, Match Walnut and Match Revelation? I recently purchased 4oz of each and found the cuts are the same the blends are a bit different. I can tell you for sure the Match Revelation doesn't taste the same compared to the House of Windsor Revelation I horde. Also what about the Mid Town series Sweet Cask, Chestnut and Chatham Manor? As for these I have found one must allow drying time to be able to enjoy a smoke. Do these compare to the originals? I don't know for sure I do know they are a satisfying smoke. At this time I am looking for matches for some of the OTC non-aromatic Burley blends.

David's opinions may vary from mine, but if you search this line up, you'll find reviews of all the blends you ask about, except for the Sugar Barrel Match, which is likely the same as Sweet Cask. I compared the originals to the matches in the reviews. thebriarpatchforum.com/thread/1258/jims-sutliff-match-reviews
I found the Revelation Match to be superior to the House of Windsor offering, though that company changed and cheapened all their blends as time went on, and sales were tanking.

Thanks for the link, Jim. I had forgotten about Hines. Really nice blend. As for the blends John Asked about I am in full agreement. I'm not sure if it was from a different batch, but my Sweet Cask had a different cut than the Match. However, it seemed the same otherwise and that may be something that changed.
PS - You know the person I am indebted to for most all of what I have learned

PS - You know the person I am indebted to for most all of what I have learned There have been two Sugar Barrel matches by Sutliff. I don't know if that has changed or not, but Milan Tobacconists version was a little different from Sweet Cask at one time. I asked Sutliff why the two variations, and they said that Milan liked the one they made for them, but Russ O and Sutliff's blender wanted to make a couple changes for Sweet Cask. You might have gotten one of each judging by your post.

I felt Russ could have blended that a little sweeter, truer to the original.
