I know, *we* generally say things like "well, it's not a good as the original" but something crossed my mind as I'm thinning out my cellar and pipe accumulation: I'm pleased that manufacturers are attempting to replicate well-loved blends from the past, even though they may not live up to our memories of those blends.
...kind of like old girlfriends... "I know they'll never match my sweet little imagination..."

Martin, I’ve been very pleased with the Sutliff release of ERR MATCH.....with just 2 years of age it gets to the moisture level I prefer and the aroma of the cocoa and nuttiness is definitely in the taste of this fine inexpensive blend. On the other hand I find Lane’s version a bit on the waxy side, for me no comparison to Sutliff ERR Match....JMHO. I’m sure other’s prefer Lane’s version.
PS It’s pretty darn close to the original, or is it just my palate???

… a number of Match Blends I regularly smoke are better than the original...and some are far better than other attempts by mfg. over the years...

Peter ^^^^^^^^^^ I tend too agree. Some pipe smokers don’t care for the new release of Amphora Original. Just age it a few months, mix the blend well in the pouch, dry out a bit to your liking and for me it’s pretty darn close👍

There is a variation or two from the 1970s version I smoked, but this is fairly close, and good in its own right. With proper dry time, it's very much like what I smoked all those years ago. The older version had a little less chocolate.

Real strides have been made and many of the Match blends are very good. Maybe after the dust settles, this same skill can be applied to McClelland blends.

I feel much better now, Thanks Ted It’s very reasonably priced by the pound. Leave some out for a while to air dry...when fresh my last 2 pound bags when opened was very moist. I have some 2 plus year age and fresh I’ve been smoking. Both I really enjoy. I’m sure you’ll enjoy the blend as well👌👍

Early bedtime, but you all know I love the Matches, at least zambini knows. Here's a quick list of the Matches I like: Nightcap: As good or better than the original Hickory: Similar, a little fruitier than original VIP: Nothing like original, which is definitely Birch. Match is Cocoa. It's still really good Ready Rubbed: As everyone else says Holiday: JimInks says good match, and from memory I believe so, too. Great English with American Nuances Brindley's: Pretty close to the original, with age might be exact. Very nice blend with a tiny sweet top surprise Briggs: Also very close. It's full of flavor for a simple blend Country Doctor: Seldom in stock, though some old tins are available at Iwan Reis (I bought two, myself). Totally great. This is one Jim recommended by phone. I didn't think it would be up my alley, but some months later when I saw it in tins I went ape. Cannot say enough good about it Match Amphora is really close. Not in rotation, as I haven't had enough of the original or Match to decide Field and Stream: Jim's review has the best comparison, but the Match is really well done with a warning: It just may not be your cup of tea Model: It's burley. It's good, but there are better burleys out there. Sutliff J4 Burley, Uhle's Burley Revelation: This is a really nice, warm and mild American English. Has a topping that brings the tobaccos together Match Bourbon Street: IMO very close to original, but less fragrant in a good way Sugar Barrel: Pretty nice, but with all the above tobaccos this is not in regular rotation. When I come across the tub I light one up Match Walnut: Nice, a notch above Sugar Barrel Match Carter Hall/H&H Chatham Manor - - - - Stick to Carter Hall for better taste and to keep it in business Prince Albert: Better than Match Carter Hall... and may be better than original Troost, John Rolfe, Argosy: None of these impressed me, but the Argosy has a nice pouch note. I don't want to condemn these as I bought small samples. That's usually a mistake. I now always buy at least 4 ounces of any tobacco to get a better cross section of flavor

That's some list, @cosmicbobo. I'm not that long in the tooth with respect to my pipe smoking life that I need to worry about matches. I'll come back when they try to match the match.
