Larry, E James make me a Mulberry pipe because he had one and loved it. My reason for that pipe was my Grandfather had a giant Mulberry tree in the hog yard, my Grandmother hated that tree, the birds would eat the Mullberries and crap on her wash hanging on the line. I had Ed make me a pair.A good friend of mine Chris wanted one but E James did not have a Mulberry piece I gave Chris my poker breaking up the pair. I really regretted that but he was a very good friend. You know what happened to Ed, Chris had stopped smoking and I asked him if he would let me have it back if it didn't have any attachment to it, but if it did forget it. He sent thenpoker back and I now have the pair , first time in my life I have asked for something back. I remembered this Brad.

Wish I had more than the two Dunhill Pipes my grandfather gave me a few years before he passed. Many were tossed in the garbage by my grandmother.....that’s a whole other story....what a trip!!

I miss Ed James big time. I was fortunate to meet him in person (at the Grabow factory in NC), as well as at his home once when I was on the road. He was very instrumental in helping me when I was first beginning to refurbish pipes. The pipes and items I had him make (and customize) for me are treasures.
Back on topic...I had a Boswell chunky apple which had JM's soft "facet cut" type rustication...it felt so good in the hand...but I was on a selling spree and let it go. I'd love to buy it back, never have seen another quite like it.

So far, the only pipes I have given away are some MM Legends. When a friend shows interest, I give em a cob, Czech tool, and few tins/pouches. Definitely a great feeling.
I have given guitars to friends who couldn't really afford nice ones of their own. I do miss the guitars, but I don't have any regrets. It is great knowing they are getting a lifetime's enjoyment out of a guitar that I would have played maybe a few times a year. I like to think the guitars are happier too.

Hey Josh my friend...you see, it's like this... I play guitar, but can't really afford a nice one myself... . . . . ...seriously though...that is so kind of you, and I'm sure your pipe and guitar friends are grateful to you. More blessed to give than to receive.

One guy was visiting and we had just been talking about his mother recently dying and later while jamming, he commented on how lucky was to have such a sweet collection, so I told him to pick one. Knowing how down he was, I really wanted to make him happy. Other dude was gigging in a crumby punk band and had their gear stolen. I gave him an American tele. He still gigs with it six years later. Makes me happy knowing that ax is living the life. Just hope it likes making punk rock. Haha

I have given things away, but I've got some growth needed before I could tell someone to pick out one of my guitars. I really appreciate your example.

I HAD an Altinok eagle claw meer which fell out of my mouth onto the concrete floor of the work barn in the last shack. Hated it when that happened and wish I had it back. Expensive lesson that one.
I'm fine with all the pipes I've gifted, sold or lost. I have all I need now and life is good.

Also, it's worth mentioning that at that point in time, my collection was not as nice as it is now. It's not like he made off with an heirloom Les Paul. Haha And I'm no saint. I had just gotten my first real IT job and was making the kind of money that meant a small town kid like me could afford anything I had only dreamt of having until that point. It was a sweet guitar though. ESP LTD in the $800ish range. Gorgeous quilted maple- stained black, antique white binding, and a gallon of clearcoat. EMG 81/85 humbuckers and a jumbo fretboard I could park my VW on... I suddenly feel like seeing if there's one priced to sell on Reverb.com haha

I find that while I miss those pipes that I have gifted, the friendship I have received back was priceless. So, when you give something of real value, you get it back in other ways...usually many times more than the original value.
