I've given away several pipes over the years without ever expecting to get any of them back and not really thinking about them.again...Some years ago though a good friend saw me smoking a pipe and commented that he really liked it,so I gave it to him.Now and then I think about how much I liked that pipe. He's a good friend though and I would never ask him to return it. .I've never seen another one just like it but if I do it's gonna be mine..Did you ever get rid of a pipe that you would like to have back?

In my previous pipe life, I had a very nice estate Butz Choquin bent apple at least 12-15 years ago, and I have no idea what happened to it. I didn't even know what I had at that point. I also had a nice estate olive wood full bent billiard (don't know maker). It was a nice pipe, and smoked well.

P U F F Y , as you did....back in the late 80’s a friend while living in Malta made a few comments on the BBB I was smoking that was made back in the pre-Cadogan era. A superb smoker, still from time to time thinking “ what a superb smoking pipe that was “, but I know it’s well appreciated by the person I gave it too! We are good friends to this day and FaceTime often, I get too also see his MUG enjoying the pipe. Yes....I would do it again!

I had a Rossi rusticated cherry 3/4 bent dublin that was stolen from me,idiot left my figural meer though.it was a good smoker, seemed to be somewhat forgiving of a bad packing job. Now on the other hand,I cleaned up a Bent Bob 3/4 billiard that I could have had a lot of "peace" with.Kind of a smaller pipe, but made well. Unfortunately, for me and the guy I cleaned it for, the owner (his Mom) decided she would use it again.

Larry, E James make me a Mulberry pipe because he had one and loved it. My reason for that pipe was my Grandfather had a giant Mulberry tree in the hog yard, my Grandmother hated that tree, the birds would eat the Mullberries and crap on her wash hanging on the line. I had Ed make me a pair.A good friend of mine Chris wanted one but E James did not have a Mulberry piece I gave Chris my poker breaking up the pair. I really regretted that but he was a very good friend. You know what happened to Ed, Chris had stopped smoking and I asked him if he would let me have it back if it didn't have any attachment to it, but if it did forget it. He sent thenpoker back and I now have the pair , first time in my life I have asked for something back.

I gave a bunch of my Comoys including a Blue Riband to a good friend...there are times I wish I had them back...but the joy of giving them to him was worth it to me...so, I guess I don't wish that I had them after all.

Your friend has enjoyed them more than you ever did. They were a gift from a man that cherished them. Now they are being cherished by your friend. However should you ask I’m sure he would return them to you. AJ

^^^^Nope, I'm still filled with the joy of giving them to him. That is more important than wood.

When I sold off my collection the first time about 25 years ago there are several that come to mind and that I'll never be able to replace. But, I try not to think too much about what I've lost and focus on what I will gain in the future.

Giving away pipes as gifts has given me much pleasure. I would not want any of them back. The other pipes I've sold off I don't miss.

The Peterson I bought for a friend at Shannon Airport in 84 has been mia for a few years now. He smoked it a few times and gave it back to me. I put it away after smoking it for about 3 months and now I can't find it. I have given several pipes to friends, but I don't miss them and I have been rewarded with several gifts of pipes in return.

The pipes that I have gifted haven’t been my favorites. Most of my gifting has been to people that expressed an interest in smoking a pipe. More often than not, they didn’t stick with it, and I was glad that I didn’t give away something that I would miss. (I didn’t dump any dogs on them) Going forward, I give to people that have skin in the pipe smoking game... I will point them to the Missouri Meerschaums, and certainly share modest amounts of different types of tobacco’s to try and find what works for them, and see if the interest grows from there.
I Recently gifted 6 pipes and Czech tools to a nephew and as much tobacco that would fit into the largest priority box... mailed it on ahead and handed to him... he was ecstatic... I Gave him a crash course on the hobby, I think he will stick with it, he is very much a contemplative sort. That was a lot of fun.

I never miss what I give away. I did have a meer lined straight pot that smoked perfectly every time. That and a cob were all I had 35 years ago. Moved so many times I'm not sure where it went. I'd love to have that back

The talk show host Bruce Williams often said "Don't fall in love with something that can't love you back". In the broader sense he was talking about posessions like property.....that your love for the posession, clouds your judgment. A pretty good code to live by, because you brought nothing into the world, and you aren't taking anything with you on the way out,

Though I've not done it often, the few times I have given a friend a pipe has proven to be as satisfying if not more, than the pleasure I had when I smoked it. As time moves on I'll probably do more !!

I bought a churchwarden pipe for my father in Stratford Upon Avon in 1993. It didn't have a long stem, it had an exceptionally long shank. Beautiful pipe. I never saw him smoke it and actually never saw it again. He wouldn't tell me what happened to it, but I assume he sat on it. Anyway, I'd like to have that one back, preferably in one piece.

It was the second pipe I ever bought a Dr graybow Omega. I dropped it cracked the shank. Ended up throwing it out as I didn't know I could have gotten a band to repair it.

You know,,,Of course you don't yet,,, A While back I picked up two of the Stanwell Brushed Brown bent dublins. Other than the finish and color, one of them is very similar in shape and smoke ability. So I'm going to take that as a WIN.

I lost about 25 pipes in a house fire a number of years ago. Some of them I really miss. Two of them were gifts my father gave me in 1965 when I was 1t. Another is a Dr. Grabow Bucko that I gave to a friend that was wanting to try pipe smoking. He still puts a lot of tobacco through that pipe.

I have fond memories of the pipes that have passed through my hands over 48 years. The joy of giving or trading away does not affect my regard for them.
All I can take with me is my memories... no pipes are coming with me.

I recently gifted my Radice Rind Hawkbill to a friend back on Long Island because he always commented on how he wished Radice made one just like it, they never did. Glad he’s enjoying the pipe, glad I gave it to him........but now I can kick myself in the butt....it was a superb smoker.
But to be honest, I’d do it again 👍👍

The only one I want back is the second pipe I ever bought, a gourd calabash in about 1982. Should never have sold it. It was such a great armchair pipe. I truly miss it. I sold it during a time when I only smoked a few times a year for about ten years.
