(note: this is unfortunately a similar experience to 's recent rant)
I worked late Friday, but the evening was sunny and hot (a rare occurrence up here), so when I arrived home, I loaded a pipe (1792 flake in an MM Marcus, if you are curious) and set out for a leisurely stroll.
Eventually, I encountered a woman walking with several children in tow. The children appeared to be less than eight years old, and it seemed the children were not hers. My first thought was the woman had the equivalent of a dog-walking service, except she walked people's children rather than their dogs. I routinely quit puffing when passing other pedestrians (and I give runners and cyclists extra leeway), but the child-walking woman and her gaggle were upwind, so I continued.
Upon noticing me, and before I could greet her, she warned one of the youngest boys to stay close to her, as though I posed some sort of threat. Curiously, a man of my stature is by no means an imposing figure, yet she immediately flagged me as a threat. It is possible that the boy does not breathe easily and the woman wished to prevent him from inhaling some of Samuel Gawith's finest, but the urgency in her voice suggested otherwise.
A few steps later, I heard a girl in the middle of the child-walking pack exclaim, "Smoker!" as though she wished first to castigate me, and second to warn the group of the imminent danger passing on their port side.
Not long ago, a man walking through his neighborhood on a summer evening while enjoying his pipe (or cigar) would have been considered a neighbor doing just that. Now I am to be feared because I am a man, and stigmatized because I enjoy pipe smoking.
Another sad commentary on our culture, but it was otherwise a pleasant evening.

Sorry to hear of your unfortunate encounter with a koolaid drinking sheeple that has sadly already begun to corrupt the young minds in her charge.
Fortunately, I recently had just the opposite experience while going for a Lunt along the streets of Manchester NH his past Thursday. I actually had several people comment positively and that they really enjoyed the smell.
In the end, don't let it get you down that there are ill-informed anti-smoking zealots among us, except for the fact that they are allowed to breed and vote. :-(

couple yrs ago, my now late IrishSetter would do the "tour" of a park across from the local School for the Blind. Almost every day, we'd pass along one stretch......I'd lower the gar & near everytime she'd stop & gimme a "please blow some smoke in my face".
Have heard the story before, her late hubby smoked both pipe & cigar. She'd many times remind me to let the zealots have it with usual freedom comments. Never "lucky" enuf to encounter any of 'em. Course was out quite early so never seen any with kiddies.
Yes, there's a few on the good side

As for me I’d step aside and let the Mother Goose and the little ganders and ganderetts ( I made that word up for female ) pass by without a comment. Don’t let the small stuff stress you out, you’ll make it much worse on yourself. When I use to walk more in parks, people that noticed me enjoying a cigar usually avoided me by walking around me at least 30 feet. However, when I smoke a pipe in the same park the majority of the people would walk by with a smile. I can not actually remember if I ever had a negative comment when enjoying a pipe. I’d never smoke a Lat bomb in a public area, that’s me with consideration. My Mom was the same, putting others before her👍👍👍

Sorry to hear of your experience, fortunately for me I don't run into many knuckleheads like that. A couple of years ago I delivered a truckload of copiers to a warehouse, while they were unloading and inspecting I smoked a bowl with an old guy from Jersey. He looked a lot like Pauly Walnuts from te Soprano's, along with the attitude. He had the shirt opened with a thick gold chain, gray hairy chest exposed. We were talking about firearms, and out walked a drop dead gorgeous woman and asked if we minded joining us. She said " I have fond memories of sitting on my grandpa's lap when he smoked his pipe." Yeah, you guessed it, Pauly said without batting an eye..."I bet he would let you sit on his lap for old time's sake". She grinned, I didn't say a word...the last thing that my boss needed to hear was that I was involved in that discussion.... my wife got a good laugh out of it though.

We're demonised from every angle.
I wouldn't have as much of an issue with that provided the woman had a word with the child for their outburst.
I have taught my girls the importance of wearing a helmet when on their bikes. Now, when my youngest, who has learning difficulties, sees someone on a bike (normally an adult from a time when nobody wore helmets) she points it out to me, and quite loud too. "Daddy, look - that man isn't wearing a helmet. He's bad." But at that point I tell her not to point something like that out in public and that he has a different view of helmets than we do. Of course, because she has learning difficulties, this happens again and again.
It would be nice if adults pointed out that there are differences of opinion with respect to smoking and children need to keep their opinions on smokers to themselves when in public.
Just my thoughts on the matter anyway.

The old historical business section in my town (some of the buildings are over 100 years old) has benches in front of the stores.I sit there often and smoke a pipe..So far no problem..One could imagine he's back in time sitting there if it wasn't for the shiny new cars zipping by.

I don't take kindly to people of such,.......nor do I really like many people much at all but, after hearing this uttered as I would pass I probably would have said NAZI! without a bit of hesitation or lack in stride. As you must have guessed already, I have little patience of anybody that doesn't have the mentality to think for themselves and suck up every bit of rhetoric that the mass media spews out. Thankful to be a Hermit.

I'm sorry but I have to add my response. Given the aforementioned scenario, I would have to jump to the side, pulled my arms in tight. With a Horrified Grimace exclaimed "Bed Wetter". Turn and walk away.Let them be appalled for once.

Personally, I try to restrict my behavior if it causes actual physical harm to another person who does not deserve it. So, of course, if a person with asthma was bothered by my smoke, I would gladly move to another location or put out my pipe or cigar. Claims of 'trauma' at even seeing my smoke from 50 yards away would not pass my real harm test.
That said, and given the current nanny state, it may be a very good idea to look up the actual laws regarding smoking in public places where you plan to do so. I would not be surprised if some places may even have bans at outdoor locations.

The uninformed knee-jerk response by the woman demonstrates the sheeplike mentality so prevalent in today’s society. Be thankful she wasn’t armed. No telling what she may have done.

Given her excessive reaction, she's likely irrationally afraid of weapons too.
