I heard something about them being coated with beeswax/honey. is that true?
I have genetic condition of high blood sugar so I need to be careful of sugar intake. if the above is true is "smoking" sugar the same as ingesting it?
sorry to be a pain I am legit on the spectrum.

I’ve yet to see a Meerschaum coated with honey or anything else for that matter. Should be white on the inside chamber before your first smoke.

just curious why do the pipes get yellower after each smoke Over the years of smoking a Meerschaum the white portion of the pipe starts to get a nice caramel color. My Eagle Claw Meerschaum has the entire shank with that rich caramel look and after 5,000 smokes the bowl is starting the process. When I purchased the Meer back in ‘87 the block Meer was completely pure white. Same with unfinished briar pipes, they too get a nice rich dark chocolate color 👍

...in my discussions with Ismet Bekler SR-Master Carver for CAO, back in the late 70's, all his pipes were dipped in beeswax...and a concoction of milk to keep the meerschaum like cheese as it was carved...

There's no sugar in the beeswax. You will get more sugar from the tobacco, but not enough to have any effect. They pipes do not have any honey in or on them.

I'm Diabetic (type 11) like you and have been so for the past 30 years and have had no problems smoking with my Diabetes. As far as meers, if they are coated with anything, it's beeswax only as far as I know. And they color from the tars and oils in the tobacco soaking into the porous meerschaum over the years of smoking!

I’ve know some that applied beeswax to the outside of their Meers and then buffed them as a matter of maintaining them. I’m not sure if this is necessary. The KBB Yello-Bole pipes had the inside of the chamber coated with honey. They claimed it speeded up the caking process and gave a sweet smoke during the break-in period.

no stupid question but is smoking honey the same as ingesting it? The honey coated chambers that some old briars used was extremely hard. I see no reason that you’d have any reaction Smoking the pipe. I’ve never seen a honey coated Meerschaum pipe.

no stupid question but is smoking honey the same as ingesting it? if there is honey there (and I've never heard of this before), but if there is, unless the whole bowl of filled with honey and you manage to get it on fire and you inhale all the smoke you may get some of the by-products of burning honey in your blood stream, but I reckon sugar won't be one of them. And with the smearing that would be on the inside of a bowl (if it is used), I don't think you've got anything to worry about with respect to the sugars.
