Hey so I'll cut right to the chase. I've got a lot of very serious health problems and as a result I am in severe agonising pain on the regular. I take narcotic pain meds but even with those I still have real bad days. I know I won't live beyond another ten years or so. Now here's the real kick in the teeth- doctors telling me I need to stop smoking my pipe. That's when they know my health is very bad, I'm in severe pain, and I'm not going to live much longer anyway. No, I don't want your nicotine patch or gum or pills, I want my GBD and Edgeworth, thanks but no thanks.

I never ever tell anyone in any form of healthcare I use or have ever used tobacco.

Other than being diabetic I'm really good shape. I'm a lil bit heavy but I'm soon to be 53. As long as I maintain, my Doc could care less what I do. She was concerned about smoking but once I explained pipe and cigar to her (she's young) she was "oh ok I get it PaPa used to do it" and she's cool.

I'm pretty sure tricare will come up with a way to penalise us for lying about this eventually. So I've always erred on the side of honesty. I always reek of latakia so there would be no point in trying to lie anyway.
Pipes are one of about three or four types of pleasures I have left. So you docs can go pick on twentysomethings ducking down Phillip Morris and leave me alone

My doctor knows about my pipes and cigars. I also told him that they are not up for discussion. So, he never mentions them as I have other things to occupy his time and efforts.

I can't remember the last time I consulted a doctor. It must have been about 4 or 5 years ago.

I can't remember the last time I consulted a doctor. It must have been about 4 or 5 years ago. Same here. My last doctor visit was because I had an infection on my knee after getting stuck by a nail at work. They gave me antibiotics and opioids (of course). Took the antibiotics, which cleared it up in 3 days, flushed the opioids. Before that was when I smashed my thumb with a sledge hammer and had to have surgery. Different story with the pain pills then, they were a must for a few weeks. I've never told any prior doctors about tobacco use. I also dont have insurance, but I wouldnt disclose that info to them either.

Yes, they have. The family doctor and cardiologist both wanted me to quit the pipe. I just asked them if they still want me to be able to relax and enjoy life, they said yes. Explained to them that sitting out on the deck with my pipe and an adult beverage makes for about an hour of total relax time. They don't ask anymore. Never, ever, put down on an insurance form or application that you smoke or drink alcohol. What they don't know and can't prove can't hurt you.

The nicotine can amp up the affects of the narcotic. It sometimes does that to me. On rare occasion, I will smoke a Marlboro just to get the narcotic to kick my pain a little more. Contrary to others I never lie or minimize my comments to my Dr. My Dr. however, is a gift from God, for me.

Only other pleasure in my life now are my 5 grandchildren. I wish you all the best and may you enjoy what you enjoy best for many more years! Pipe smoking lowers my stress level and the nicotine helps work with my Meds, in most cases👍

When visiting my doc about my throat I mentioned I smoke a pipe somewhere between once and twice a week in the summer months. He shrugged as if to say, 'that's negligible'.
I did recently change my life insurance to say I smoke a pipe. For them it's all or nothing. So I can smoke by brains out and they'll still pay out (in theory).
I thought it better to get that right in case there's some query that would make them withhold payment to my wife if I die... If that was the case She'd kill me all over again.

God forbid you lie to an insurance company that would be their first reason why they would not honor the policy and pay the death benefits!!

In the USA the third leading cause of death is going to the doctor. I'll take my chances with the few bowls of tobacco I smoke per week.

One of my most serious health issues was caused by “ serious medical neglect “ and misdiagnosis from 2 different doctors! Only Dr I trust 100% is my friend back on Long Island. My Neurologist down “ heir “ has spoken with him over the phone concerning my severe Neuropathy issues. My Dr friend has been published a number of times and my Neurologist here knows to consult the “ best “!

My Neurologist down “ heir “ has spoken with him over the phone concerning my severe Neuropathy issues. My Dr friend has been published a number of times and my Neurologist here knows to consult the “ best “! I feel a rant coming on. Want to lower your blood pressure fast? Get on a plane and go to Europe--they have a different scale there. Of course if the medical community did that here, so much less medication would be sold, and fewer trips to the doctor. About 30 people a year in the USA die of insect bites/stings. Yet millions don't leave the house without an epipen. A VERY expensive one. About 300 people a year die from lightning. Since I am 10 times more likely to be struck by lightning than killed by a bee sting, wouldn't it make more sense (10 times as much sense) to carry a portable lighting rod with me everywhere I go? Oh wait, the medical community doesn't sell those. I got stung on the face by several hornets a few years ago. I went to the doc, primarily because I was fearful of an allergy developing. I was told that an allergy to anything can develop at any time. So no way to tell. She asked if I had any symptoms--I said no--only the swelling. She told me she had no idea what caused the slight swelling on my face, maybe I slept on my head in an odd fashion the night before. I left quickly. Sorry--swelling is common with bee and hornet stings. I wish they taught them that in medical school. I also wish they would teach them about "white coat hypertension." Every year when reporting to my urologist for my annual "probing," the gal taking my blood pressure would always tell me it was a bit high. One year, I responded to her idiocy. I told her if she knew that within 10 minutes Dr. Smith would be knuckle-deep in her arse, her blood pressure might be a bit high too. OK--rant off. I feel much better now, thank you.....

I don't inhale or smoke confined in a closed room, nor do I drink liquor in unhealthy quantity... so irrelevant and none of their damn biz! Never tell or write on any med form.

Non of my doctors know I smoke a pipe. As far as I’m concerned it’s no one’s business. I’m home inside the house about 97% of the time. What I do in my house is my business. No health insurance company has any info about me smoking. Only my home insurance agent knows that I have a large amount of tobacco which is photographed and inventoried. He knows I have a couple of hundred pipes in a “collection” but I’ve never told him I smoke. Should anything happen to my pipe collection or tobacco his company pays.

I really wish I could still drink but I have had to give up alcohol completely. I keep a tiny bottle of cheap rum around just to clean my pipes with, and thats it. I don't drink it at all anymore. The days of the tod are truly over for me. I have interstitial cystitis, ontop of everything else wrong with me.

How times have changed. When growing up in a tobacco culture, both my doctor and dentist smoked cigarettes and the MD did so during routine visits/procedures.

My Doctors at after me to quit smoking. Even though I have told them I have quit the cigs. They want me to also stop smoking pipe. I have told them that my Father and Mother in Law both passed about 6no after quitting smoking. End of discussion. I told the I will try to reduce the number of bowls I smoke per day any it may take some time.

Without thinking about it, after the affordable care act protocols were put in place, the healthcare worker asked me if I smoked, without thinking, I said "an occasional cigar" believing it as a throwaway comment. The next time I went to the doctor's office they asked me about my smoking, I told them that it should have never been put down that I was a smoker, and told them that I had been an occasional cigar smoker but no longer do and asked to have it removed. I was told that the system only allows them to modify it to "former smoker". Of all people, I should have known better, but by nature I tell the truth and as I said it thinking that it wouldn't register on the radar screen. Great stuff, huh?
