So, now that I have a few pipes, and I've started smoking aromatics, Englis blends, and Virginias (VaPers, Virginia/Burleys, and straight Vas are in my rotation,) I'm curious what others think about what blends you can smoke in the same pipe, and what you can't. Would you smoke all Virginia blends in the same pipe, even with perique? Would you smoke, say, Early Morning Pipe in the same pipe that you smoke heavier English blends? I want to be sure that I don't ghost my 8 pipes. I got plans for each!

I dedicate Pipes to only Burley blends, same with Virginia’ as well as Lat blends. If I know a particular blend I enjoy but can/will ghost a pipe I then use a Cob....every time👍

I have pipes that I only smoke English, Balkan or Orientals in. I don't mind smoking everything else in the rest of my pipes. I have one cob for Lakelands, however.

3 pipes for VA, 2 pipes for an aro, 1 for red VA. Everything else is whatever I grab. Some pipes work better than others for some blends, like burleys in cobs. I don’t stress too much about it, but then again, it took some time for each pipe to let me know what works best. But in reality any pipe will smoke any blend and it’s a matter of preference for me. I want my VA pipes to only taste like VA for example. Experiment and have fun. I keep a notebook for if I get a new Pipe or blend to make notes in. Only exception as already said, Lakeland’s or Blends known to ghost just by the Pipe looking at the tobacco (talking to you M79) to me would dictate a dedicated pipe, because once those types of blends are smoked in them, they forever remind you of it. At least in my experience.

I have a couple cobs specifically dedicated to those tobaccos which will definitely ghost. One for Cult Blood Red Moon, one for Deer Tongue blends, one for lakelands. My briars are less dedicated, but I do have those which I smoke lat blends, aros, and Virginia/perique/burley. I don't want toppings or smoked meat coming through with my straight tobacco blends.

8I have pipes dedicated to Lat. blends and Lakeland’s. Everything else gets smoked in whatever pipe I grab. After somking an Aromatic in one of my pipes I always follow up by smoking a Burley blend in that pipe. This leaves the pipe ready for any other blend. Burley seems to cover anything left by the Aromatic. YMMV.

I have a cob for lakelands, and it's every pipe for herself after that.
That's right, my pipes are female.

Interesting thoughts, Something to think about, due to the toppings and casings. Doesn't all tobacco ghost in some manner?
Even smoking CH, PA, a VaPer or even a straight Va if smoked full time will be tasted in the future. Think about the estates you bought and just cleaned then smoked and do an alcohol treatment . Did you taste the previous blend?

The worst ghost in an estate is a tobacco smell you love, but can't identify. I have experienced this with a couple of aromatic ghost pipes.

I thought, at first, that this was a thread about identity theft Okay, so here's how I handle this. I use one pipe and one pipe only for aromatics, a Grabow Omega. I have two petersons I use for Virginia/Perique blends and ALL of my other pipes are for latakia-heavy/English/Balkan blends because thats primarily what I smoke.

Oh, and do use rum or whisky to clean your pipes. Not only will it disinfect everything but it will also make your tobaccos taste great and remove any old odours/flavours very well

Hadn't thought of that ! Since I smoke only Va's and Va bllends and nothing with Burley in I don't have that problem !

Hadn't thought of that ! Since I smoke only Va's and Va bllends and nothing with Burley in I don't have that problem ! I've actually found that instead of ghosting the pipes, the spirits actually neutralise odours and flavours. I just finished cleaning six pipes this way, and I've never had a bad experience at it. EXCEPT ONE TIME. I had a no-brand Polish pipe and I cleaned it, just as I have for years with all of my other pipes, with whisky. Before my very eyes, not roughing up the pipe at all, after only having it two years, pieces of briar began to fall out. Now, I am not saying this to scare you, its not my cleaning method. That was just a faulty pipe. But I've never had that happen, or even heard of that happening, to anyone since.

I smoke about any thing in about every thing and as of yet have failed to notice and ghosting in any of my pipes, but then again I don't have as sophisticated a pallet as you other pipers.

I am not real worried about ghosts.
I have havnt had anything die in or around my pipes. I am guessing that will help keep the spirits away. I promise not to haunt my pipes when I pass on.

PS. Was only my poor attempt at levitate.

JMHO
Burley in cobs. Why bother with perfection? Va and VaPer in briar. I do have a couple specific dedications. Lat in meers. Smokes cool and no worries about ghosting.
The only aros currently in my regular rotation are JM Boswell Pennsylvania Dutch Treat and Mac Baren Vanilla Cream. The first has a 2004 JM Boswell billiard dedicated for the task, the latter has two Pete 312 Systems.
I totally get it why others would take things to another level; however, this system serves me well which is all that is required.

Mark, usually a Burley blend smokes excellent in a Cob .....so I always thought until during this early morning! I recently purchased another 2 pounds of Sutliff ERR Match, which I’ve been air drying due to the blend being extremely moist for me to enjoy. Plus needed days of air drying before I jarred most of this fresh batch. I’ve smoked a few bowls after it dried a bit in 2 different very old briar Pot style pipes with a wide chamber. Both were extremely enjoyable even though I was smoking a fresh blend. Around 3:00am ( another night of lack luster sleep ) I decided to stuff half a bowl of ERR in one of my MM Country Gentleman pipes that’s dedicated to Burley blends. I was shocked and astounded, the blend smoked horrible in a Cob, burned well but with no taste or complexity whatsoever. I then stuffed the Pot style pipe I smoked this blend in prior, low and behold....it was wonderful once again👍👍👍. So, go figure???

Some can smoke just about anything in any of there pipes without a ghosting effect, while some enjoy the ghosting. Myself on the other hand can't and won't smoke a pipe that has been ghosted by a Lakeland, just god awful. But, I can smoke Lat blends and anything else in one pipe without it bothering me and I sorta like the Lat flavor in the background. But, again I have to have pipes dedicated to ODF and Escudo because ODF just over powers everything and everything over powers Escudo. If truth be known, I'd have at least two pipes dedicated to every tobacco I smoke if I could but, realistically this would just be way too many pipes FOR ME to have in a rotation so I've just taken the ones I smoke the most of and done it. Everything ghosts as far as my palette say's.

… Ghosting is fine by me...unlike Ron...I have broken-in many of my pipes with Condor Long Cut or Plug and rather enjoy the faint taste it leaves...I have very few pipes that are dedicated...

I went through a process of smoking every type of blend that I have in every pipe to figure out what worked best. Now I usually smoke Vas and VaPers in pokers, have a pipe dedicated to Condor, one for Ennerdale; but the rest are pretty much smoke whatever. Really it is just do what you enjoy, the journey to find exactly what that is truly is half the fun.

I sort my pipes by natural vs aromatics. When I try something that will ghost, I use a meer.

I have 4 cobs that are dedicated to each of the 4 types of tobacco. Love Lakelands and Irish Condor Long Cut and Plug in particular. I have a small (1/2 flake) paneled pipe that I use exclusively for Irish Condor. Since I have so little of Irish Condor left, I smoke it sparingly. So...ghosts don't bother me...my pallet is also not that sophisticated.
