Today I had some kendal cream. This time, however, rather than rubbing it out or folding and stuffing (which never works for me), I put it on a chopping board and cut it into little cubes. I suppose this is what cube cut is.
Anyway, I had much better success with this method with respect to packing and keeping it lit. I thought I'd share.

I also use either one of my cleaver knives or a Ulu knife which easily rocks up and back as you feed the flake tobacco. If it’s a flake that’s not overly moist I use a small electric coffee grinder I purchased just for tobacco use. I’m not a fold and stuff the pipe kind of guy. I even rub out a good coin tobacco, much more complex enjoyable smoke. Everyone has their own method for stuffing flake or coin blends.

Cube cut, dry and gravity pack ... super easy and effective. Congrats!

I may be wrong, but I think that ready rubbed tobacco is actually cut, and not rubbed. I don't know its all up to the smoker, some guys LOVE really long strands of tobacco in their bowl, says it helps to keep it lit and smoking cool, but it drives me crazy. I like to keep it short and neat.

I usually fold and stuff my flakes. Sometimes, I rub them out, with the intention of a quicker smoke. In the end, it doesn’t make a difference. It usually takes the same amount of time to smoke a bowl. Occasionally I cut a flake into cubes. I think this is my preferred method, but I usually don’t have patience to wait while I operate.

I use the same procedure when jarring a few pouches, the blend marries and has much more complexity to my taste and nose👌👍

This close to my routine, only I usually rub them out and occasionally fold and stuff. As to cube cutting, anymore blood loss and I'll get sympathy cards from the Red Cross.

I'm a believer in K.I.S.S method, just slice it off thin, rub and stuff. Just got done with a bowl of Wessex Gold Brick Virginia Plug and it was smooth and sweet.

Depends upon the thickness of the flake for me. Thick ones are cubed more often while thin ones are rubbed out more.

I've went more towards fold of stuff over the past few weeks. Sometimes I get an odd burn, but in the end I'm happy. Works great for my yard pipes because I dont have to spend any time prepping.

Here's my issue with fold n' stuff ... if a Flake will fold in half, it's way to moist for me.

Mine rarely fold neatly, the outsides of the fold break in half. The only flakes I've smoked, so far, are Drexel VIII and Orlik Golden Sliced. They're both pretty thin. I have others, just havent opened the tins.

When I saw your thread Cutting Up a Flake, I thought that it was a plot to do away with Jim Inks.

LL has said what works for me, but I am not an expert

I have very few pipes, where I can use the fold'n'stuff method without getting in trouble, so I usually rub the flakes or like LL, turn them into a cube cut.
So far I've only tried two coin tobaccos, Escudo and Dunhill's Navy Rolls. With Escudo coins, I just folded a coin in half and bunged it in the pipe. With Navy Rolls, I just need to stare hard at the coin and it crumbles all by itself and in ye pipe it goeth.

I fold and stuff but I'm willing to fiddle it because I get great flavors when the baccy is just right. Mr Moo at psf had a huge thread on flakes including a scale for dryness and smokability. 1 is a fresh tin of gawith and 5 is drexel viii. I shoot for a 2, pretty much half the strands of tobacco break when I fold the flake or coin. Generally it takes 4 or 5 good lights in 15 or 20 minutes to get a flake really burning well with this method, but during that time its just barely smoldering and that slow burn is where the flavor of the baccy really shines. Of course ymmv and I'm an almost overly patient person 99% of the time. I suck at burning cube cut anything because the cubes don't make any sense when burning because the tobacco is too jumbled up to pass an ember effectively.

I have that saved in three or four text documents, should I post them?

I've used scissors as well and the results were quite satisfactory.

Sometimes I use a little cube cut on the top of fold and stuff. It’s great to get the bowl burning evenly.
Here’s a great how-to video for packing flakes in various ways. He’s spot on with the fold and stuff. This way works like a charm.

But the cube cut is exactly as I did it.

Sure, it’s much easier to fold and stuff, but I much prefer to cut, cube or rub out my flake tobbacco’s. They burn much better, smoke with more complexity of taste, less re-lights.
