Can the term "Poker" be used interchangeably with these two pipe styles? Or are they considered two completely different shapes? I'd venture that a cherrywood is subset of the parent "poker" style. I know this is probably semantics. Just interested in your thoughts.

I never knew that. I thought the names were synonymous.

Poker Pipe is the style, any wood, briar, Meerschaum or Morta can be used to make a great smoking pipe that sits well. Here is a picture of my Don Warren Morta Poker pipe made to my specifications. I’ve posted pictures prior, it’s an outstanding smoker and sitter as well👍👌👍

Sure, I know a pipe smoker that owns 2 beautiful Cherrywood Poker Pipes. I’ve yet to see his pipes tip over when not stuffed with tobacco. Either with straight shank and stem or bent stem with the base cut on an angle like the Dagner Design Poker Pipe.

Here’s another of my standing/ sitting Poker Pipes with a bent stem, with no tobacco in chamber.

Back in the day, late '60s early '70s, a Cherry wood was just that, a pipe made from Cherrywood. Ropp was known for their Cherrywood pipes. A poker was the name given to a style of Briar pipe as made today. Times change !

All my Cherrywoods are cherrywood, Ropp and Realcherry, which is made in Australia. I recommend sticking with the Ropps. All my pokers are Briar. One Winslow Crown and one Radice Clear. I probably have a dozen Ropp Cherrywoods. Great smokers, kind of between a cob and a briar.

Once you take the proper time and break in a Cherrywood pipe they are good smokers👍 I don’t own a Poker that doesn’t stand on its own without tobacco in the chamber. But I don’t own a Cherrywood Poker pipe, but if it’s canted on the bottom it should stand or sit with no problem. Similar to the MM Dagner Design Cob Poker pipe.

I don't think any of my current Cherrywoods sit. They have round bottoms. I have several in a drawer awaiting restoration and I don't remember their exact shapes. I think at least one is a cherrywood poker. 🤠😎 PS: I have one on the way that's an Alpine style Ropp cherrywood that will definitely sit. It's pyramid shape bowl. It's one of their top of the line and unsmoked.

Ryan Alden did a Cherrywood for me. If I recall he said he hadn't done one before or it had been a long time. I also have two Cherrywood shapes from Larryson and one from Jesse Jones. My favorite shape btw. I have posted pictures of them all here before.

My favorite shape btw. I have posted pictures of them all here before. I'm usually more of a smooth pipe guy, but the textures on those pipes are absolutely fantastic. Especially the one that looks like bark, if you will. I really like the rim on the middle one, too.

peteguy.......those Cherrywood Pokers are stunning. Each one as it’s own character, for sure they will catch the eyes of pipe smokers 👌👍

I had forgotten Ropp made some pipes with real cherrywood. Another sign that the “gold” in my golden years is getting tarnished. 🤫 AJ
