I've noticed that when I dump the ash, mid-bowl, I often lose the ember too. No biggie - I just relight. But I've noticed that if I use that relight as a charring light and then tamp and light again as if it was the start of the pipe, the pipe stays lit better for the rest of the bowl.
Does anyone else do this (or is this what's supposed to be done and I'm only finding out now)?

I will sometimes light a bedtime pipe only smoking for several minutes then tamp the tobacco down and place the pipe in my leather Savinelli zip up cover to have it ready for the mornings dirts smoke, I haven’t had a morning relight in a very long time. banjo

Rarely do I relight after a half of a bowl has been smoked, not to say I haven't, but very rarely. I figure that after smoking cigars and the crazy prices they charge for a stick I can afford to dump a lil tobacco and start fresh.

Just tamp and re-light, it’s that easy. I’m not one to leave tobacco in a pipe over night and re-light in the morning. Many pipe smokers do, everyone has their own way of enjoying a pipe👍

I don’t dump ash. I just tamp it down. I think it helps keep a nice cool smoke going.
I often will set a pipe down and come back to it in an hour or the next morning. I’ll usually do a little picking and then tamp and light. I’ve found a few tobaccos that dont taste good later. However, in general, Va, VaPer, and English blends smoke just fine when you get back to them.
