Today I noticed when I get on TBP that there's a new balloon above the "Profile" on the toolbar. What is this?  |

It indicates the number of unread notifications recorded in your profile.

I use a pc exclusively with Firefox and the notification balloon just started popping up on mine.

I changed my notification settings to only be notified if I get tagged or quoted. I get fed notifications that way.

I think that's wise. Getting a notification every time someone 'likes' one of your posts might be a bit much. I don't want to feel like a social failure if I make a witty retort and no one clicks the button |

The last place I was at, the like button created a points system. You could either give or take away. It was not conducive to a healthy, friendly community.

The button never bothers me, once you click on profile and notification, the flag disappears without even looking at the “ likes “. This morning the white flag showed I had 43 “ likes “, I did a quick glance through and that’s it. It’s not a big deal either way.
I agree with Justin’s point of view, taking away “ likes “ from members will just create unwanted issues, this I too know from experience!

thanx for that thread starter. Me, Mr. Primative, never hit any of those choices. (I keep this screen & the chat in separate listings in "favorites". After reading, hit "profile" just to see whot was about. Was lucky enuf, after checking myself out, to hit the "recent threads" button to return to this screen. only "balloon" I seen was like a number over "profile", me shows 8009. Really rather not know what all that is....I get confused easy enuf as is! Maybe hit "messages" next

Yes. Likes make up the bulk. An anomaly noted is that a total viewed on main page is reduced when you click and go to WAYS. Presumably an assumption is made that you will see the Likes there (?).

YOU CAN GO INTO YOUR PROFILE......CLICK EDIT PROFILE......UN-CHECK “ LIKES “ ....everything else you want to show up will be listed except “ LIKES “. Edit to how what you would like to see in notifications. |

So on the forum Justin used to be part of, the likes/dislikes were utilized sort of like the plus/minus in hockey...where a guy who carries a negative is on the ice more when the opponent scores rather than when his team does. Those carrying a negative appear to be more of a liability. I can see how that could be a huge counter-value to a forum like this, where it's highly subjective to personality / mood / preference.
Just being silly now...but how much worse would it be if we then added a Cracker-Barrel type status underneath the member's avatar...so when your like/dislike rating drops to 0...."Ig-no-ra-moose".
