nedwrecks raises a good question here.If you don't normally smoke a bowl all the way to a fine ash,do you have issues forming a cake in the heel of your pipes.Quite often I only have time,or patience, for a quick smoke so I load half bowls alot, also I tend to clean mine to bare briar anyway so I can't really answer this one myself.

I haven't had that problem yet but I usually try to finish the bowl, seldom do I dump half bowls but will if necessary.

I usually smoke 3/4 full bowls, I personally don’t like tobacco’s hanging over the rim of a pipe. Plus 95% of the time I smoke to the bottom of the bowl. Only time I don’t is if I feel the blend is starting to taste a bit off or a lot of moisture sets on the bottom. After each bowl I roll up a half sheet of paper towel and do a deep clean around the inside of the chamber. Yes, I still get proper cake build up, but a much better smoke when I’m ready to load that pipe again. I also use pipe cleaners after each use, both smooth and a bristle to keep the draft hole clean and clear of build up. It’s worked for me for many years. Other pipe smokers have their own methods I’m sure.

Just yesterday I took the pipe down to the shop and ran a drill thru it and the crap that came outta that shank and stem was unbelievable and I purchased this pipe from a reputable local brick and mortar, guess they had no idea either.

Hope they cleaned the pipe properly at no charge if they were the one’s that sold you the pipe. Now you understand why I clean my pipes after each use, for a much sweeter smoke next time👍

I'm the same... I clean after each smoke so It's going to take a long time for cake to build up.

I scrupulously clean the shank and stem after every smoke and periodically with alcohol, but I never wipe the bowl. Cake will build, and I will scrape it down as required. I like about a time's thickness.

Even though I wipe the inside chamber after each use a even thin cake forms quite fast. I wipe down to remove moisture and some nasty tar, keeps the pipe smoking sweet👍

I am a cake advocate, but clean the bowl and let it build over time.
