I'm really feeling sorry for him today. We were planning a weekend at the cabin, starting on Friday. We only made the plans when I got my exhibitor packet for the State Fair, and I have to have my afghan in Lewisburg Saturday morning. It's 2 1/2 hours from here, but only about an hour from our cabin. Hubby looks for any excuse to go there.
Well, earlier in the week he was contacted by a general needing a photo by the 10th. I guess there is some kind of promotions board or something coming up. Since hubby had already put in to have Friday and Monday off, he scheduled him for Tuesday of next week. Well, this morning he is contacted about another general needing a photo, and they want it done on Friday. He told them the situation, and they originally planned on doing it on Tuesday as well, but evidently that is no longer any good and they want him to come in late Thursday evening to do it. Problem is, no one knows what time Thursday evening the general is arriving, it's could be 2359 for all they know, and I seriously doubt the general will be agreeable to having it done at midnight. I doubt his uniform would be in order, and at that late hubby won't be worth anything -- they expect him to catch all the errors and flaws in the awards, etc. I also pointed out to him that if he works that late on Thursday he will be in no shape to drive on Friday, so he might as well work Friday, and maybe he can get the other general scheduled for Tuesday on Friday too and then just stay until Tuesday at the cabin.
He is getting increasingly frustrated with his job. When he started 5 1/2 years ago he loved it, despite having to learn for himself how to use the camera and take good photos. Now he is top photographer in the country (no actual recognition, but when officers from the Pentagon, National Guard Bureau and Special Forces in Europe come to dinky little Charleston, WV just for HIM to take their photo....) but they are increasing demands on him and aren't giving him a raise. When people from outside WV come here for a photo, that brings money into the State, but no recognition for that either. Also, when he started there was a different Adjutant General, he had the position for like 30 years and he was old school. Things were pretty good under him. Now we have a new one, an arrogant one and everything is becoming political. It's a hostile working environment. All kinds of backstabbing and passing the buck to protect careers of unworthy individuals. Unfortunately hubby is "at will" employed which makes things even more tenuous. He just got a new boss and this guy is an absolutely arrogant, ignorant, unrealistic $#@!*$$. He talks down to hubby and treats him like a trained monkey because he doesn't have a degree, like him. However, this genius with the degree put out an email the other day with two blatantly misspelled words that simply rendered me speechless.
Of course, hubby wouldn't be dealing with this mess if people didn't wait until THE LAST MINUTE. But officers, generals especially, expect that when they are ready for something or want something done everyone else cancels their plans and rearranges to accommodate them.
If hubby gets 100% disability with his back, it may indeed be a blessing. He would miss doing the photos, but not the stress.

That is the key to ending this bulls**t. Get the disability which he richly deserves what with his "issues" and get out and back into living your lives, instead of being at the beck and call of every idiot with a rank. His frustration is not doing him or you any good. Time to bail out, IMHO. (Easy for me to say, I don't know your situation).

Hopefully your husband will be granted 100% disability and he can relax more and work β the hours he chooses β! Those Generals walk around with way to much starch in their crouch πππ. Hope ALL works out so you can both have an enjoyable weekend.....just remember your husband is in pain....no hanging from the chandeliers...lol.

I hope it all works out. As a photographer I understand people and their demands of the one behind the camera. Its all about them and their time and how it fits into their life no matter what last minute changes they decide. Luckily I was able to do away with all commissioned work and photograph only what I want, when I want. I only keep a few commercial clients and they know me and give me carte blanche. So again, I understand and I truly hope he gets his disability and freedom.

How does he pull that off? My second wife was in the air force when she took a civilian job at the base and she almost lost her commision and etc. unless she left her civilian job. She had to much time in the service to give things up for a civy job ! Seems the govt. thinks 'cause you wear a uniform you belong to them !

Seems the govt. thinks 'cause you wear a uniform you belong to them ! it's a weird situation, it is a civilian job on a military base -- the Guard is saving money that way because he isn't racking up military retirement points, it is actually a State job. The State and the Guard are quite cozy and help each other out in a lot of questionable things. The TAG recently put out that employees there would have to have permission to have outside jobs, which he isn't allowed to do, but until it's challenged he will get away with it, and no one is likely to challenge it because it would be career suicide.

when I collected hubby from work he told me that the Chief called him to find out why there was a problem fitting the general in. When she heard that the guy had the wrong date initially, and waited until the last minute, she told him to go on his trip and the general would just have to have his photo done on Tuesday, he shouldn't have waited until the last minute. Kind sad the only one with any balls in that place is a female....

Margaret you may not agree with me in what I say, but I have walked the walk. Some of the things you are saying in this thread, you should think if you want them on the internet. I know I am not the most popular guy on this forum, but so be it. I do know a thing or two about disability and the military.
