As the title says I have just started smoking flake tobacco from ribbon cut. At first I was just rubbing out the flake and then stuffing it into my pipe. Now after a couple of great smokes using the fold and stuff method it's my primary choice on flake smoking.
However, I have been having issues with the cake bunching at the bottom and sticking together. The last couple of times I have had a pipe I knocked the pipe using a cork knocker and a wad of tobacco comes flying out that did not want to burn. Anyone got any ideas or techniques to prevent that from happening when doing the initial "stuff"?

Mine did that when it was still too moist and actually folded. Now when I fold it, it breaks in half and I havent had that problem. They to dry a little more? Or maybe stuff it upside down (fold at the top). I havent tried upside down, but it makes sense in my head. The cup of the fold would burn at the beginning.
Just my thought. I prefer to fold and stuff over rubbing it out.

This is a new tin of Samuel Gawith and I did note the tobacco flake to be a little on the moist side. I'll let it dry out a bit and try again. Thanks!

I would have said the same, but I'm loving cube cutting these days. It's the way forward.

I guess because all I have is time on my hands now, I take the time and rub out my Flake blends well. If most I then let air dry as needed. For me it smokes better with far superior complexity while smokingđź‘Ťđź‘Ť

I've been smoking flakes almost exclusively for several months now. I agree that most benefit from some drying time. But I really think that rubbing out a flake fully sort of defeats the purpose. For me, flakes burn slower, cooler, with less chance of tongue bite. I have been trying to fold flakes and stuff them so that there is an air pocket at the bottom of the bowl. I don't always achieve this lofty goal, but when I do it is generally a great smoke. Just my 2 cents' worth.
Edited to say that since flakes and bowls come in different widths, knowing which flakes pair best with which pipes can be handy.
Happy smoking......

Perfect fold and stuff dryness to me is when half the strands or just over break when I fold it in half. I also keep the fold at the top because ita like buolding a fire that fold across the bottom of the bowl is gonna be a pain to smoke. It also seems to help with spreading out the flake to fit the top of the bowl creating thing spots to take the flame a bit easier. I'm going to experiment with a few bowls and twist the flake a bit before stuffing it into the bowl.

SG blends are known to be rather “moist”. Some would describe them as “wet”. Drying times vary from about 15 minutes until more than an hour, depending on the flake’s moisture content. You may have to experiment a bit to find a happy medium for you but well worth the effort. Let us know how things turn out.

I think william hit the nail on the head: "But I really think that rubbing out a flake fully sort of defeats the purpose. For me, flakes burn slower, cooler, with less chance of tongue bite. " Other than folding and stuffing, cube cutting is probably best because it preserves the density and chunkiness of flakes. But my favored technique is just jamming the flake into the bowl, and taking a couple of unlit test draws to see if it's packed too light or too hard. And I think beardedmi has this right: "Perfect fold and stuff dryness to me is when half the strands or just over break when I fold it in half." Too dry will burn easier but you might lose some flavor, especially if it's chocolate flake!

If you want to 'cheat' a little, you can always rub out a small quantity as a topper to get the works going.

Many pipe smoker use this method with great success đź‘Ť I use my thumb or index finger to "rub" the top layer around, I just dont have the same success with rubbed out flakes. I think this boils down to what works best for you is the inportant thing. I enjoy seeing the many different ways people prep and pack their tobacco.
