If this should go in "what are you smoking" or "pipes and PAD" or "tobacco and TAD" so I put it here in general pipe smoking discussion.
I just finished smoking my tenth one/third of a bowl in my new Savinelli 121, waiting for it to cool, cleaning it and then starting over. I'm ready to move on to the second/thirds but can't muster the intestinal fortitude to do so. I have to be honest with Y'all "I'm really tired of Cornell and Diehl "Old Professor" in fact I was about to skip thru the house tossing rose petals in to the air when I discovered that I didn't have enough to have an eleventh bowl.

There are very few tobac's I'd smoke 10X in a row. I like Sutliff: Old Professor, but when in rotation, I smoke 2 or 3 bowls of it in a week.

Why do you need to use just one tobac for the process?

Why do you need to use just one tobac for the process? Because I'm a freeking moron! Never occurred to me to mix it up, it really never did. I just grabbed the jar, walked to the puter and lit up. And to the fella above it is Sutliff not Cornell and Diehl I miss spoke earlier

I have a few tobacco’s I enjoy repeating during the course of a day, but I could not smoke it 10 times in a row....good for you Jack. If it works for you, why not 👍

On occasion I may smoke ten bowls a day but I mix it up. I don’t believe I’m capable of smoking the same blend 10 times in a row during the same day. “Variety is the spice of life”.

You are overdoing it in breaking in the new pipe. Smoke 3 or 4 half+ bowls and then just go for it. It's a thousand to one that you could hurt it.

Yep, that's pretty close to what I do, 3 or 4 half or slightly under, 3 or 4 about 3/4, then full up. Never worried about harming the briar, it's Damn tough, just want to tar up the chamber.

Did all those partial bowls when I first started smking then an old codger asked "... why are you smoking those short bowls, is that how you normally smoke? " Since then, when I get a new pipe I load it up and smoke a full bowl, let it rest a day or so before I smoke another full bowl. Go for it !

Just load it as usual and smoke it. That's always worked for me whenever I've gotten a new pipe. I've never done partial bowls for break-in purposes. It has yet to harm a single one of my pipes, whether it be a cob, briar, clay, meer, or olive wood.

I figger there's no one real way according to Hoyle way to do it. 1/3,2/3 full is the way I was told to do it. I have seen all the YouTube bids and weighed all the options and figgered this one will work for me

I don't think he meant that he smoked 10 bowls in a day, I might be wrong though. As for you AJ..if you smoke 10 bowls in a day, don't be surprised if your neck morphs into chimney bricks!

I always just fill my pipe and smoke it too. Most of the time, with briars I'm dumping the bottom third of the pipe anyway so it never hurts my pipes - at least, it has never hurt them yet.

With cobs I just fill and smoke, I don't see the point of going thru the break in process. It's not that I value cobs any less. I think of cobs as grunts and know they will get the job done no matter what!

None of the msjor pipe materials really need babied when breaking em in. Yea it increases the risk of a burn out, but going outside increases the chance it will rain in em. Load, smoke, repeat early and often. I do rest my briars between bowls. Cobs and meers do not get that luxury, my cobs usually ride in the truck until their first ream then they ride for a week at a time with a little down time in between. My first cob rode shotgun solo for near 3 months 300 bowls or so its still going strong.
