Patty, sounds like you have a drooling issue. What causes you to create so much saliva while smoking a pipe? Tasty tobacco? I had this problem and I quit resting my tongue on the stem and learned to hold the pipe more rather than let it rest in my mouth.

With a cob it's not so much of an issue. Them dried out cobs can hold a lot of moisture from a salivating piper, I think they are called cob slobs!

Darin nailed it. And if my pipe gets too hot, I just set it down for a minute or two. There is no law against relighting. I have also noticed(with cigars and ciggarettes a well) that if you give a small puff outward to clear the residual smoke out before setting it down, you won't get that stale smoke on relighting.

Clenching a hot pipe for a minute or two, totally hands free, helps a hot pipe cool.
