Just saw on another forum that there appears to be a problem with Carolina Red Flake. There seems to be some new tins of the flake are already beginning to mold. Had a picture and this was not just a spot that might be mold. It was definitely mold and there was a lot of it. From the picture, it appears the tin had just been opened.
No info on possible reasons why until the C&D factory opens tomorrow and they have a chance to look into it.
Possible recall on the horizon?

That is very disturbing. This is not the time to have a problem like this, if mold is really the issue.

This is certainly disturbing, I bought my tins specifically for aging, I had no desire to open them for at least a few years. I appreciate any follow-up on what action if any the blender is compelled to initiate.

The following was placed on the above mentioned other forum a few minutes ago:
Hello all,
In regards to the handful of instances that have been reported of mold spores affecting tins of Carolina Red Flake, we're highly disappointed and extremely embarrassed. We're distressed because, on the one hand, given some of the advancements we've made in the workshop over the last few months, we really and truly believed moldy tobacco was part of C&D's past. And on the other hand, more importantly, it disturbs us to the core that we could make and sell anything that's not up to our standard. . All of our fans, all of our customers, have every right to be upset about this. And we're going to do what we can to make it right.
We're looking into how limited this mold spore problem is surrounding Carolina Red Flake. But honestly, we're not likely to ever know just how many tins might actually be defective out there.
Subsequently, we're addressing the issue at C&D. It's early still, and so we're not 100% sure yet what this process looks like going forward, but obviously our anti-fungal treatment methodology needs adjustment—and we'll do just that, without compromising our commitment to produce a quality pipe tobacco that's as natural and additive-free as we can afford to make it.
But what can we do for you to try to make this right, now?
If you've got a tin or tins of Carolina Red Flake that you don't want, if it has (or they have) got mold in it, or you're concerned there might be mold in it/them, or if you just don't want the tin(s) anymore for any reason, contact Laudisi Distribution Group (sales@laudisi.com, 843-491-4150) and we'll pay to have the tin(s) sent back to us, and we'll give you your money back or, if you'd prefer, give you replacement tin(s) of some other pipe tobacco blend we make.
I can't even begin to tell you how sorry we are, how sorry I am, that this has happened. We've worked so hard over the last few months to strengthen our products all the way through the production chain—evidently we still have work to do.
I hope you'll give us the opportunity to work with you all to correct this mistake. Likewise, I hope that you'll continue to support C&D in the future. It's always been our mission to make quality, natural pipe tobacco that people love. We set high expectations of ourselves and so we'll be the first to own up to our blunders. And this is a blunder, make no mistake. Yes, mold in pipe tobacco can happen, but that's not a good enough excuse. It's not good enough for C&D and it's not good enough for you, our customers.
Sincerely yours,
Jeremy Reeves

I didn't have any issues with the only tin of nine purchased I've opened. Perhaps the one with issues was an outlier.
