I never knew this has happened before. That changes everything. I reckon it'll be a while after dunhill is sold out in USA that stock starts to deplete in the UK. From my vague understanding based on half-forgotten forum posts, Dunhill stopped making Dunhill in the early 80s. They were then made by Murray in Belfast, and supposedly went downhill. Then I guess the brand had a hiatus and came back in the 90s, made by Orlik. Some say an improvement over Murrays, some say not. I'm sure there's a lot more to the story than that.... One criticism I read about the Orlik era was that while the original Dunhill Latakia recipes specified Dubec, Samsun, Smyrna or whatever, Orlik just used some generic "Oriental" leaf for everything. I never knew that dunhill went downhill.

You may fish...but I won't bite. Good man! I love McClelland (Virginias and Grand Orientals) and Dunhill (everything I've tried), but in the long run I've smoked more Dunhill. I hate to see them go and hope that they'll be back ... again. The Orlik versions are the only ones I've smoked ... and they're wonderful! Hopefully, they'll continue to make them in the future. In the meantime, I'm stocking up for the tobaccogedon.

How many times has Dunhill Tobacco ceased production? How many times has Dunhill Tobacco come back into production? Something to Ponder! Dunhill Tobacco has never ceased production until now. The tobaccos have been blended by various houses through the years, but in Europe, they've always been available. Maybe they've been taken off the US market and then re-introduced.

Yes this sucks. Dunhill had quite a few nice blends. I went full hoard mode as soon as I heard. I’m stockpiled with a lifetime of B.B. 1938.

Nightcap: GL Pease Quiet Nights I'm surprised at Quiet Nights as a Nightcap replacement. I would have thought either Westminster or Odyssey in the GLP line?

From what I've read in the menswear press, Dunhill is no longer putting it's name on ANY tobacco products but is now focusing on High end clothing and jewelry and gifts. BAT owns the Dunhill name for the ciggs it produces and has for many years and will continue to produce them and sell them with the Dunhill name on them. The new pipes don't even have the Dunhill name on them rather they are now sold as the White Spot pipe and the stores are named such that they are sold in. From what I've read, Dunhill stopped making it's tinned tobacco sometime in the '60s, and only blended their tobaccos in thier stores. Many other firms such as Murray in Ireland blended them for many years , then Orlick and STG has been the latest blender. Production is supposed to end in December of this year, so get your Dunhill now as all that will be left after then will be what is on retailers shelves!

I don't know if the method to date a Dunhill tin as explained on the Smoking Pipes website is accurate, but if it is, I bought several tins of Early Morning pipe in November of last year, and several more last month--all with the same date code (2012). So if the dating information is correct, some "flavors" might be stacked deeply in warehouses somewhere. (Of course this might all be wishful thinking).

I just mean that there are still Dunhill branded cigarettes. It's odd to me that they'd license the name for cigs but cease the other tobacco-related stuff.

Nightcap: GL Pease Quiet Nights I'm surprised at Quiet Nights as a Nightcap replacement. I would have thought either Westminster or Odyssey in the GLP line? Quiet nights: Ripe red virginias, fine orientals, smokey Cyprus Latakia, and a pinch of Acadian perique The smokey Cyprian lat and Turkish leaf on the base of red virginia and the pinch of good quality perique.. All of that combined in the dunhill ageing and blending technique marrying all of these components together with a high nicotine component without the major slap in the cranium is what makenight cap what it is. Basically what I described above is what GLP did when they made this blend. Perfect match? No. But cut from the same cloth.

I think some suppliers weren’t rotating their stock. I received a total of 25 tins of 5 year old MM965 across three different orders from SP last fall.

Personally, with Dunhill, my two favorites are nightcap and EMP and I am fully stocked up on them and the match varieties of these two are pretty good as well, so I am ok either way. I would love for someone else to get the license to blend them and keep them going, even if it's under a different name, but I know the legalities of this might prove expensive and with the market being what it is for tobacco, there may not be anyone willing to dish out the money to acquire them. We shall see. It's such an iconic name that I can't really see someone not going the extra mile to add it to their repertoire (I'm looking at you Laudisi).

I think Alfred Henry, Mary and later Richard loved the history of the pipe business but they knew what made money. Dunhill diversified early on even before Alfred turned the company over to his brother and Alfred Henry to run off with his mistress.

I'm never so quick to judge on marital affairs. Sometimes the one everyone thinks was run out on was actually the problem, but who knows, that's why I leave that sort of thing to the Dunhills.
I think the whole reason we had Dunhill tobaccos around for so long is because Richard WAS a pipesmoker and wanted the legacy to continue in some way.
The good news is I just checked out the new Dunhill pipes and they still have the name Alfred Dunhill on them. That part of the license wasn't excluded.
