I'm curious...
For the all-day-pipers (or at least those who smoke most of the day), is it a case of lighting up another when one is finished, maybe stopping for food etc.?

It really depends on the day. If I'm working all day I will go to snuff but if I'm home messing around on here I'll wait sometimes an hour sometimes not.

Depending on the blend and how I pack the pipe I smoke a bowl every hour. If I’m up for 30 plus hours with no sleep I’ll skip a few hours in between to give my mouth a rest. I’ve smoked 21 bowls in a 30 hour period a few times!! Believe me, I’d much rather be sleeping👍👍
PS I GO THROUGH A LOT OF TOBACCO!!!

If I know it will be a lazy weekend (day) i will load four or five pipes and space them thru the morning, maybe.Usually smoke them one right after the other and then load five more.I do use different blends for each pipe unless one of them hits the spot. That one I might smoke three bowls in a row.

I am not as prolific as many here, I smoke two or three times a day, sometimes less, sometimes more. Sometimes if I sit down to smoke and I don't have much going on, I'll finish my pipe and then refill it with the same tobacco as I'm sitting there. Other times it may be hours between. It usually varies depending on what I have going on.

If I smoke one, I smoke two more immediately after. I don't smoke all day, and some days i (shudder) don't smoke at all. But I rarely smoke less than two or three in a row.

It all depends on what I feel like. Sometimes there's a break between pipes and sometimes I load the next one as soon as I finish the previous one. There’s more likely to be breaks between bowls during the day (one of the joys of a home office is smokes while I work). In the evening it’s more likely to be back to back.

During the week I only smoke after work. I normally get anywhere between 4 and 7 pipes in before I go to bed. On the weekends it's a different story. As long as I'm around the house there is a good chance I have a pipe going from my first cup of coffee at 6 am until I go to sleep around 12.
There's no rhyme or reason to what I smoke, it just depends on whatever sounds good when I'm loading the current bowl.

I should probably add that I am retired, with plenty of time to smoke. I realize that you folks still in the labor pool don't have that luxury, but rest assured, I appreciate you paying into Social Security.

Hours during the work day, back to back when at home or driving a good distance solo.

I’m going to attempt to answer this with another quote from Mark Twain:
“As an example to others, and not that I care for moderation myself, it has always been my rule never to smoke when asleep and never to refrain when awake.”

I am retired as well, but I don't smoke in the house so I have to go outside to smoke. It is almost an event. If I smoked in the house I would have a pipe hanging out of my mouth all day.

I usually load one before I go to bed for the mornig before breakfast then I start the day with another pipe after I eat. Then I'm on my way to a usual 6/8 bowl day. Since I have 100+ pipes I usually don't smoke the same pipe for a few days. I go thru a 50 g. tin + a month. That's a lot of Royal Yacht !

When I am properly in the pipe groove, it's about 3-6 bowls a day. I'm a set down puffer though. I can light a bowl, set it down for an hour, come back to it and milk it for half the day. So it all depends on how much of a choo-choo I am that day.
After re-reading... that didn't really answer the question. Time BETWEEN bowls... all depends. Sometimes back to back... sometimes hours. Really just depends on my mood.

Lots of different approaches, as always. But the general theme I'm picking up is that for those who can (after work, during work, or not working, better weather) there isn't too much time that passes before another pipe.

Sometimes I smoke pretty much all throughout the day. Occasionally I’ll go a few days and not even smoke.
On average I smoke about 3 bowls a day.

Up to three bowls back to back and up to 5 bowls throughout the day. I try and only start smoking around the cocktail hour.

And in my case it is "another pipe". I don't smoke the same pipe twice in a day. That is why, when I can, I got more than one of the pipes I really really like, so that I can continue smoking without reloading a pipe.

I doubt the total number of bowls I smoke daily in retirement is substantially different than when I worked. While the variables affecting time between bowls has changed significantly, the amount of tobacco smoked appears relatively constant. Smoking habits had to be more regimented when I worked and my bowl pattern was geared towards smaller bowls, even on weekends. In retirement I've almost completely shifted to larger bowls and my few remaining smaller pipes seldom see action in the daily rotation anymore; furthermore, I can savor more now so bowls don't go down as quickly as before. There's not as much premium on finishing a bowl as I can freely smoke the first half, set down a pipe and finish later as I please.
When working, building my cellar and preparing for retirement, I always assumed I'd smoke more in the latter phase; however, that hasn't necessarily proven to be true.
