I ordered a few tins of Wessex Brigade Campaign Flake about 6 months ago, and put some in a Ball jar. I was down to 4 flakes left in the jar so I opened another tin. I was amazed at the difference. The darker flake on the left has been subject to aerobic aging, the one on the right anaerobic aging in the vacuum sealed tin. They both seemed to have the same moisture content. I sort of didn't expect that after just 6 months or so. I smoked the darker one a little while ago and might try a newer one in a bit--just for the sake of comparison. The darker one was delicious..... Not sure if my picture really captures the difference.....

You've gotta do a back to back taste test.

Interesting. I always assumed leaving it the tin was best, but this seems to suggest jarring is the way to go.
* why does spellcheck always change "tin" to "tine"? I know tine is a word, but it's certain less common than tin.

William, makes a big difference with a few years of aging. Another example...Orlik Golden Slices if aged 5 plus years the flake is some much darker and richer in flavor. Same with Newminster #400 Superior Navy Flake, it’s fairly cheap and worth waiting 5 years to age properly. It’s another of those hidden gems👍👍
At first when you mentioned two flakes I thought you met 2 of my siblings....LMAO! You can pick your friends, you can even pick your nose, but you can’t pick your family!!

I’ve found tobacco ages far better if not vacuum packed. Needs a bit of air for proper fermentation 👍

I still have numerous tins in the cellar, but I posted earlier this year regarding tin failures and heard crickets chirping. Doesn't occur often, but sad when it does. Jars are THE way to go.

You've gotta do a back to back taste test. I'm sorry to report, my friend, that like you, I do not have much in the way of a sensitive palate. The darker flake that I did smoke was easy to keep lit, and was a dark, fruity, fragrant smoke. Seriously--my dentist hasn't numbed me for dental work in well over a decade--several fillings and two crowns. I really do not feel anything. He tells me that he thinks I am a bit numb from the neck up--I tell him that that is a great trait to have when one has a ham-fisted dentist. It does make for a quick trip for a filling. One day he did a filling on me in 12 minutes. I do value efficiency. So no need to do a back-to-back comparison. It would not yield any useful data due to my insensitive mouth....

As long as you enjoy both then it doesn't matter.
