Most of us have heard that before, but while the shipper was preparing some naval guns for transport, I decided to have a smoke. Mary came out and saw me smoking a pipe and she said..."I never knew you smoked a pipe, my grandpa used to." Being the smartass that I am, I said "Mary, if I walked in the warehouse smoking my pipe, I would probably be gunned down, no reason you would know." She told me that she would be bringing grandpa's pipes in for me to see...well it was a cased pair of Longchamps, and a Beattie Jet lighter. He only smoked one of the pipes, and he was either a meticulous smoker, or he didn't smoke very often, not enough cake worth reaming, and a swab of alcohol on the rim cleaned up the soot. The Beattie jet lighter is pretty darn cool, held vertically, it would be good for a cigarette or cigar, angle it forward and the jet flame shoots out through the tube, and as you draw on the pipe with the flame near the bowl, it lights the tobacco with a lot of finesse, and presents no chance of rim charring. And looking on the net, this is mechanically in tip-top shape as far as what to look for when buying an estate Beattie. And the Beattie uses Zippo/Ronsonol lighter fluid! The overlapping collar at the top of the pipe looks like a pretty good seal to prevent evaporation...we will see. I asked her what she wanted for both.... "I want a happy pipe smoker", she said with a wink. I will be buying her lunch though. Trying to remember if I ever saw such an oval bowl before on the unsmoked one.

Thanks Guys..after less than 3 minutes of polish, she looks better. After you tilt the lighter for a few seconds and the flame is emitted from the tube for the pipe, it has a torchlike sound...but you still have the soft flame at the end of it. I learned quickly not to overfill it, I was doing the flame hopping Watusi dance...knew it was going to happen though, I had soaked it pretty good.

That Granger tin is pure art. I saw an ad on Craigslist for old tobacco tins for $40... showed up at the house, and a 20 something kid met me at the garage door, he just wanted to make the sale, and it was obvious he wanted it done quickly. It was a huge Rubbermade tin with a boatload of collectible tins, I made a crapload of money on EBay... what brought in the most money was the metal tins of Camel cigarettes. I kept the Granger tin, as it was the only one that spoke to me... donated the rest to people in the pipe club... win, win! Gotta admit, kinda regret selling the (Afrikaner/ Africaner?) tins... they were pretty cool.

It's funny how so many of our acquaintances don't know about the pipe smoking. Like you said though, with all the restrictions in place, how would they. Nice of her to pass those on, for sure! I've got a Longchamp just like that but haven't cleaned / smoked it yet.

Nice additions to the collection. I love pipes with a good story and history. Congrats.
My grandfather smoked a pipe too. He’s how I got into the hobby.

Very nice of her, and nice pipes with a story to boot. I'm not surprised she didn't know. I'm pretty sure only a handful of people around me know I smoke. Im sure the smell of latakia on me has some others wondering wth the smell is.
The other day my mom told me she was going to look through her storage building and call my aunt and uncle to see what happened to my grandfathers pipes. He smoked from the 50s to the early 80s.
