www.thepipenook.com/store/c32/Series_III_Unfinished.htmlFirst, Eddie added the Mega Sav Line. Prices look cool. Bigger news is the variety of Unfinished Savs has doubled and the prices are cheaper than normal, with some pipes down to fifty buckos, 10 fins, 5 sawbucks, 50 Somolis, 1 Grant. If you have any Jeffersons lying around (2 dollar bills), it will only be 25 of them. If you're a barber, it's Shave and a Haircut... 400 bits

Those prices are really good. I'm assuming they're cheaper because they are unfinished?
And what's the score with that. Is that so that you can finish them as you would like to yourself (kinda mid way between a kit briar and a finished pipe), or is it just a 'finished' pipe in and of itself?

They do get a dark rich chocolate color, darker the more you smoke them. When ordering I’d suggest asking “ can you please ship one with the least amount of fills “!!

Legend Lover they take on color after smoking, though I used olive oil on mine and got a deep red color. @10furlongs yes, as nice as you could ask for. Also added some more codger blends

Unfinished Savs are actually almost always available from a couple Italian shops across the pond on Amazon. There's an additional kicker as Americans don't have to pay the EU tax in some cases so the additional shipping burden is diminished if waiting a few more days isn't a burden. Actually, they finish themselves when smoked, color somewhat like meerschaum but more uniformly. Bees' wax can expedite the process but unnecessary. Great smokers for the value.

I have a 5 year old Lumberman with seventeen fills I can count with the naked eye, consider them badges of courage.

David, thanks for keeping the Briar Patch updated! I tend to have about a dozen standard unfinished, unfiltered shapes, but as they sell out, I hide them from the store. The others are marked in the titles as 9mm Filtered, and I do believe The Pipe Nook is the only place in the US that currently offers these 9mm versions of the Series III Unfinished pipes. I special order them from Savinelli because I'm such a fan of the 9mm pipes myself. Savinelli Plus 9mm filters Plus Unfinished makes for about the best smoking pipes you can get, to my mind!
To answer an earlier question about what the unfinished pipes are all about, I'll post the item description from the site below:
Savinelli Series III pipes are unfinished and un-fancy. They started out as various Savinelli shapes for different lines, and were pulled from the batch for various cosmetic reasons such as a small void, or an opening in the grain. Rather than being destroyed, as is the case with other briar pieces with more functional issues, these were sanded as smooth as possible and fitted with a non-filtered vulcanite stem and are sold in an "unfinished" state. What this means is that these are still very good smoking, well-drilled and stamped Savinelli pipes, without staining or waxing...just with a little cosmetic flaw or two to give them a bit of character. This provides a wonderful smoking instrument at a very reasonable value that has the potential to smoke even cooler than your more expensive pipes, because they have no finish barriers to hold in heat. In addition, these pipes have the side-benefit of coloring to a dark brown over time as they are smoked!

A picture of my Savinelli Series III Unfinished Billiard pipe. It’s an excellent smoking pipe but has 11 HUGE fills. I’ve smoked this pipe over 750 times ( lost count ) only finish to the briar was and still is a quick wipe down with my mixture of bee’s wax and mineral oil with a microfiber cloth after each smoke. It’s a real dark chocolate color👍👍

Kind of lousy prices to be honest. I usually see them for $49.95.

In fact, looking at a few of the stems I was sure some of them weren't. I also saw really obvious divots all over one billiard. I am open to new venues, if you care to part with the info.

Is there any reason I couldn't do your method on a pipe that had a finish for many years?

Don’t forget this was completely unfinished briar, your May come out even darker...I think it would look great...good luck👍

Remember, never use wood stains on a briar pipe, use a good leather dye if you decide to not go unfinished.

I have the 613 Bent Brandy Saddle Stem. It's coloring slowly but surely. I'm not smoking it often enough. Gotta love those pits!

I missed Eddie's post - the higher price is justified for the 9mm if they're otherwise unavailable in the US. And if they smoke anything like my Stanwell HCA 9mm, I believe that they are excellent smokers!

Not only that, but the last time I saw them at P&C they were 5$ higher on each pipe. But since P&C does run a lot of specials, who knows?

David, if you purchase from P&C wait until they put their unfinished Savinelli pipes on sale with a choice of one of three Savinelli tin tobacco’s. Four years ago my Savinelli Series III UNFINISHED Billiard Pipe was $69.00 and a choice of one Savinelli tin tobacco....that’s a great deal👍👍

However, the GBD I got from Brother #6 will be my last pipe for a while. Many cobs in the future. My pipe collection is where I like it, which is about thirty pipes more than I ever imagined. I am so tempted by some on Eddie's site. (Second) However, with me, it's all about tobacco. I want to sleep in it, bathe in it, wear my tutu and dance in it. I want to be me. I've got to be me.`

Remember, never use wood stains on a briar pipe, use a good leather dye if you decide to not go unfinished. Yes, I might have access to some Rockler dyes. But care to elaborate on your beeswax/mineral oil concoction and/or technique? I'm up to 5000 sanding which is probably overkill, thanks.

I purchase a medium size bar of edible organic bee’s wax, melt to a thick liquid state and mix in pure mineral oil. Let cool, it will hold it’s thickness similar to toothpaste.

This is NOT to take business away from the Pipe Nook....but the Savinelli unfinished (aka Series lll) are also available HERE for even less money. I bought an unfinished Sav 320 as well as a Rossi Vittoria (Sav sub brand) 320 from these guys...for about $50 each. Their customer service is excellent; talk to "James", he is great.

Thanks for that. More info is always better. I've ordered from this company before with no issues. Now, an aside: That link you provided has Eriksen shorties. Any idea what those are made of. Can't find it on the site, so I'll keep looking Found my own answer: The shorties have ceramic bowls

David...yeeeeaaahhh...those $14 Erikson ceramic pipes...they're likely really good for smoking blends not found at your favorite B & M or online tobacco shop.

I had an inexpensive calabash with a ceramic bowl decades ago. Looked great. Smoked fine, but I didn't like that it couldn't build up a cake. That may be a blessing these days as building up a cake is not an obvious plus. I will be nailing at least one of those pipes for the price. I did read their 30$ briar screw in bowl pipes had issues and Nording nor the dealer would not make good... But ceramic is forever, unless I am in the process of dropping mom's collectibles
