I'm watching Yellowstone with Kevin Costner and I love the format of the modern western. Can anyone give me a title or two of such. I really don't want anything sex filled (I lived survived the T&A Seventies). My book suggestion, although it has some of that is Nevada by Clint McCollough. It starts out in Texas and tells the story of how a carnival guy works his way up to Gambling Mogul. Along the way you get real people mixed in, like Benny Binion, another Mogul who started in Texas, Bill Harrah, etc. Really good read that most of the reviewers, like me, got it out of a 25 Cents Bin at Walgreen's. It's on Kindle, btw... and finally.
Hoped for premise: Some big Land/Oil/Cattle Baron at odds with the people around him. Anything like that?

I wish I could help, but it'll be no time before someone pops on and gives a suggestion or 10.

Have you ever read "The Virginian"? An old story, but still good.

Try the Longmire series, it’s also streamed at Amazon. His stories are very good, modern day Sheriff mired in the Old West appeal. Takes place in Abarasko County, in Wyoming.

Have you tried any of Tom Lea's books? "The Wonderfull Country" is a story about the Texas/Mexico border 150 years ago and of course there is his two volume work " The King Ranch" Good western history/novels IMHO.

One of the better books is The Son by Phillip Myers, Texas boy kdnapped by Indians rises to great wealth, a mini series was made about it on TV. You"ll like the book, as Justine Wilson would say I Garrontee!

Hi guys, thanks so far. Here's some response while still looking:
Longmire - TV show. Trying to get away from that. Eye strain. I have seen an episode of it and will put it on my list once Yellowstone is over
Virginian - Started the book, put it down, thanks for the reminder
Tom Lee - Never heard. Will be looking into it before nightfall.
Lonesome Dove - Read all 2600 pages in less than six weeks, the four novels, that is. Wife and I have watched all the movies many times. Absolutely love it

Cormac McCarthy writes some slightly strange fiction--a lot of it set in the old west. He has been hailed as "the new Faulkner" (he is not), but I enjoyed "All the Pretty Horses" and "Blood Meridian" (which one critic suggested was the greatest novel since Faulkner's "As I Lay Dying" (it is not). He also wrote "No Country for Old Men" which, as you know, was made into a popular movie. Just my 2 cents' worth. I'm sure when our new Irish moderator awakens from his slumber, he can tell you about the Irish name "Cormac" and how one of McCarthy's titles owes a nod to the famous Irish poet William Butler Yeats.

I was in Sligo a few weeks back where Yeats is buried. I wasn't aware of one of McCarthy's titles referred to him. As for the name, 'Cormac' - it's been a while since i met someone with that name. It's a common enough name, but after a quick look online to see what it means, I found this... I guess I'm a Cormac lover.

I have seen an episode of it and will put it on my list once Yellowstone is over I watched the Longmire series twice (Netflix) and I am now reading the books written by Craig Johnson. The books are so much better than the shows, and I loved the shows. The books detail the relationships between Walt and the other characters, especially Henry Standing Bear. They are laugh out loud, a bit gritty, and the plots are twistier than briar grain! There are twelve books in the series, so far, and I think I am on #5. Fair warning, there is a racy scene in book 3, and the language can get rough. Oh, and the retired sheriff Lucian, smokes a pipe in the books.

Not a new or current writer but my favorite westerns have always been the Sackett series by Louis L'Amour.
