Is there an easy way to tell whether a stem is plastic, acrylic, vulcanised rubber etc?
If I'm looking at a pipe are there any telltale signs to watch out for?

Bite it. Acrylic is harder than vulcanite and has no "give" that vulcanite has. If your looking at a pipe that you can't bite ask the seller. ! Plus vulcanite even when polished doesn't "shine" the way acrylic does in my experience.

The best grades of vulcanite/ebonite have a slight 'give' to them, imo.

Both of the above are very true! If you purchase a pipe online always ask the retailer your purchasing the pipe from👍
