Question: How was the package shipped, was it shipped UPS, FEDEX, DHL or another carrier? The tracking info on the will say who the shipper was.
I doubt the package was marked GIFT since it came from Smoking Pipes or another E-tailer. Since at this time there is no knowledge of the shipping company all that one can do is ASSUME and stir the pot.
From what I can assume a phone call to the customs office is the first step towards a solution of this 3 pipe problem.
Have a good day.

For about 30 years now I've collected Fountain Pens and dealt with collectors world wide sending pens and receiving same. I never had any problem sending pens to England where I dealt with thre collector/dealers. I always marked the packages as a "gift" on the US customs duoane and they never had any problem in England with it. The Germans were the best with no taxes on small items sent through the mail. Italy, France, and Spain were hell, with a lot of packages arriving empty to the collector!

Any package sent directly from a business will NOT be considered a gift. If it’s marked gift “ friend or family “ there should be no tax or Vat fee....not even a handling fee. Extremely glad to see you back and posting....a PLEASURE 👌👍👍👍

It’s highly taxed if sent by a business, if sent personally as a gift there should be no issues even today.

@lonecoyote , bingo you are right. I sent the package to Paddy using USPS it was marked GIFT. So this comes down to the method of shipping and the company used.

I was thinking once I feel a bit better I’d like to make him a good Algerian briar Billiard bowl pipe. I have the perfect piece of 75 plus year old briar. BUT.....Paddy needs to find out for sure if he’d be taxed on a personal gift, that I’m sure you understand.

Guys, you're killing me with kindness. Seriously, don't be taking any risks.
Anyway, I'm not giving out my address so 😝.
I'm just gobsmacked that they would charge that amount for 1 tin, but also confused why 4 tins would be charged a fifth of the amount.
I'm not going to make enquiries in case I get myself in hot Water. Not sure how I would, but don't want to take the chance over a $9 tin of tobacco.

Value it as you would a friends respect. 4. Research gifts, think birthday. Look at the links Trailboss posted.

I was lucky, ALL my packages were sent to my Embassy 👍👍 USPS is the only way to ship....totally agree with you! Either Birthday or holiday gifts shipped there are no issues!!! Plus, customs in Ireland have much stricter rules they follow, very similar too the stringent custom laws of Australia!!!

So I decided to chance my arm and order a tin of C&D Autumn Evening from SP. I've heard this is a nice blend so I thought I'd chance my arm and pay the customs fee (on $9 tobacco I didn't think it would be that much). It came to $12 including delivery (cheapest delivery option). That was a few weeks ago. I got a card through my door saying there's a parcel for me that is held in customs that needs a fee to be paid. Guess how much the fee was.... $260 They can keep the freakin' tobacco! I hope they get blisters from it, Arseholes! sorry that was bad but not any worse than what they are doing to LL. MOVE HERE!

Thanks, I missed that... the Devil is definitely in the details. 10 cigars or 50 grams of pipe tobacco. How much would 10 Churchill’s weigh?, a bit more than 50 grams... not saying cigars should be restricted to 50 grams, to the contrary...

A pipe sent as a gift with a declared value of say $25 would not be taxed since it's not tobacco, right? Just sayin'.

Bad luck, LL! To put things into perspective, here's what I paid my last order of 4lbs of tobacco shipped from the USA: 4 lbs of tobacco: $225 Shipping: $120 Import duty: $90 VAT: $34 Mystery charge: $19 Handling fee: $3 I paid the grand total of $491 gladly, because I really wanted the tobacco I imagine you have to be very sure of tobaccos you like. Paying those prices makes trying something new, a risky proposition. I mostly know what I like, but always throw in something new to try. My orders are fairly big, so if I choose a lemon...no worries. Anyway, see my signature

The website said if it's not paid in 21 days they'll return it or dispose of it. I hope that's what happens.

Yes, that's what happened to me when my mom was trying to be nice and sent me about 12 packets of Drum when i was still smoking roll-ups and living in London. I can't remember what the customs bill was, but it wasn't worth paying it. They either smoked it themselves or binned it, but didn't return it. Then there was the time she sent me a huge Indonesian skeleton-themed CD cabinet, and wrote some outrageous value on it thinking it was for insurance purposes! That one I did pay the customs duty on. She's a very cool woman, but not very practical....

Also much was kept for personal use, heard this from the “ horses “ mouth.
