So this may be a bit of a random problem/question. I have recently purchased a couple of pipes, one a meerschaum and one the Peterson 2018 pipe of the year. Both have very deep bowls, and I have found that as it gets down towards the bottom, if the pipe goes out, it becomes a challenge to light way down there without charring the inside of the bowl or the rim. Is there an easier way to do this or should I just suck it up and relearn how to smoke with a deeper bowl

Deep bowls are a hassle. I'd ask slowroll, he has some deeeeeeeeeeeeeeep bowls.

Matches produce less heat than fueled lighters, and they are easy to get down into the bowl. Do you smoke a wide variety of tobacco's in the deep pipes, or just a few?
Flake, loose tobacco, plug, etc...?

I was going to suggest matches too. You can get the extra long ones too. They might help. Or maybe hemp wick. slowroll will be able to give you concrete advice. He loves his stacks.

Yes. Get this: (clickable thumbnail). Its called a Crocs lighter. You can buy them at most dollar stores across the US. Handy little damn things. I use it more than my pipe lighters.

Find a place with no wind and use a long wood match. Won’t damage the chamber or the rim. None of my pipes have the slightest of rim burn. Good luck👍

Have you not seen the rim burns on some of Slowrolls pipes, he uses a blow torch...lol. Like he said prior...” I can always make another “.

I heard the page...I always use stick matches for the deep bowls. Work fine. I also use a Zippo with pipe insert occasionally. Putting the round opening centered on the bowl works fine. However, after it's smoked down a ways, one does need to scrape out the ash a bit first. Dry tobac essential to avoid excess dottle. Low humidity helps too.

wow. Ok. So apparently this is not as bad a deal as I thought. I'll be investing in some additional fire creation techniques and I will try them out. As for the type of tobacco, it varies, flakes, plugs, ribbon, shag, coins....I've got a bent for all of them at certain times. I'll play around with them. Thanks for the replies!

and don't be hesitant to dump the dottle, if you grow tired of fussing with it.

I have to get in on this. Only able to look in a few minutes at a time right now and this caught my eye. My fingers are getting used to being burned, because, like a dolt, I tamp with them and thumbs. Yes, the Stacks take a little extra finger/match/lighter manipulating while smoking and cleaning. After a time or two you get it. It is well worth it. I had one deep bowl I gifted (not a slowroll). I was gifted a slowroll stack and this is almost always my morning pipe with Five Brothers or another burley. It's one of those mini-rituals to look forward to in the morning. Had I not gotten so TAD crazy this year I would be getting a second one. Oh, and if you want, just fill a half bowl for short smokes. You will not be disappointed. May the Smoke be with you. I can say no more.

For my pipes with a deep bowl I use a Nimrod Commander pipe lighter, (similar to a Zippo), with success.

I'm not a tall bowl guy. My personal fave is a nice grp 4 Pot. I feel a shorter wide bowl allows the blend I'm smoking to open up. The tallest bowl I have is a Grp 5 Tanshell Dunhill billiard and a grp 5 Charatan tanshell Billiard. And I use matches almost exclusively. Works for me.

Funny, I have a problem keeping really wide bowls lit, and I think the flavor tends to be muted. 13/16 inch dia. is my limit, and I prefer 3/4. One of my favorite smokes (just finished it in fact) is 11/16 and nearly 3 inches deep.

With deeper bowls I use a long pick to loosen top ash and blow it out, then stir and tamp for a fresh start. Lights more easily than initial charring lights, and generally stays lit without relights until the end, depending on blend and moisture, of course.

One thing I found with deep bowls is that, if you dig into that ash at the top of the bowl a little bit, carefully shake out just the ash, retamp, and relight, that last bit of tobacco at the bottom is much easier to light and tastes a heck of a lot better.

I've found this recently with normal bowls too.

The main diff in my observation and practice is that I also remove as much of the centrally positioned char along with the ash, and then stir & tamp the remaining load for a fresh start.

I’d also clean out the top ash carefully, but would only re-light if it’s a decent amount of dry tobacco....not wet dottle .
