Scrooge sent me some great tobaccos in the mail a few weeks ago (thanks again, buddy) and I am still really enjoying all of them. One of the blends he sent me is John Bull.
I am smoking a bowl of this stuff right now in my Peterson Aran 606 smooth, straight pot. As much as I hate to compare a pouched tobacco to Nightcap or Elizabethan, there are similarities in this blend to both. I would say that the nicotine content is quite a bit less. But the latakias in this blend are in heavy proportions. I don't detect ANY perique, so its not QUITE nightcap, and this is probably why. However, the bulk of this is a heavenly blend of bright Virginia and white burley with a tiny bit of what seems like some VERY lightly cased black cavendish, which provides for one cool, smooth, complex smoke. I never thought a decent English tobacco could be done in a pouch, but STG seems to have pulled it off with this blend.
The blend burns to a perfect white ash. When I dump the remains into my ash tray, its almost disintegrated, there's barely anything left. I've noticed that this is the case with all of my favourite blends.
While this tobacco is not as good as Nightcap, its almost as good, and coming from me, that says a lot. This is a perfect all-day smoke when you just want to grab a pouch and a Dr Grabow pipe and go for a walk or head into work or study. Two big thumbs up. If you are an English smoker and haven't tried this yet, it is time.

Scrooge also sent me a pouch of JB. I agree with you that it is a fine smoke and deserves a look.

I like it because it is a light English, the first time I got a pouch, I thought that it is a shame that it isn’t carried in establishments where other inexpensive pouch tobacco’s can be had.

Good review. Glad it might scratch the nightcap itch for you when it's no longer around.

I have not tried this. I wanted to when it was 2.99 a pouch. Then it went up to 5$.That's roughly 50$/pound. Super Value English can be had for 3.33 per pouch and has Perique. JimInks The Man From INKS gives it 4 of 4 stars. I think it's exceptionally good and has enough of a flavor difference that when you want to switch things up it works quite well. Unfortunately it's the only one SV does't sell in a 12 oz bag

If you like lots of latakia flavor in your blend, don't bother because this doesn't have that. This is a very mild blend with some subtleties of each aspect of the tobaccos in most every puff. I don't think I've ever seen a tobacco with several different kinds of tobacco be this mild before. The Virginia is a little grassy/hay with some citrus as the base of the blend. The lightly nutty, earthy and lightly molasses sweet burley is almost a supporting player. The Cyprian latakia adds a smoky, woody sweet push, and is just a tad more obvious than the burley. The black cavendish provides a mild sugar note in the background. Has a very mild nic-hit. It's an unobtrusive all day smoke that burns a little fast, but not hot, and won’t bite. Leaves very little dampness in the bowl, and hardly needs a relight. Has a decent, short lived after taste. This is for the smoker who wants a little smokey taste as he goes about his daily business, but doesn't want his senses filled up with what he's smoking. It's as well balanced a light smoke as I’ve encountered.

Ooooops! Jim, I was referring to Super Value English: JimInks Reviewed By Date Rating Strength Flavoring Taste Room Note JimInks (2177) 2015-12-17 ★★★★ Medium Extremely Mild Medium Pleasant The red Virginia is dark fruit sweet with a little earth. The bright Virginia is grassy and citrus sweet. The burley provides a lightly nutty sweetness. The smokey, woody sweet Cyprian latakia is a major player, though it never dominates the experience. The perique is a minor ingredient, more plum than pepper. Also added to the mix is some Turkish, which seems to be Smyrna, which is woody and buttery with a very slight sour, musty note. Well balanced with a little complexity, it burns smoothly at a moderate rate with few relights, and a consistent flavor to the finish. Will burn to the last ember as it leaves virtually no moisture in the bowl without bite. The nic-hit is mild. The strength and taste is right at being medium. The after taste and room note are pleasant. It’s an all day smoke that won’t dull your senses, and would make a good starter English blend as well as a comfortable companion for one experienced with blends in this genre.

Hi Though the Latakia content is light, this tobacco is very interesting burley forward blend. Some say it is a good introduction to English varieties. I agree. However as a lover of many different Latakia blends, I find John Bull offers a complex and unique smoking experience not limited to the beginner. The price is also very attractive.

I ordered a pouch of John Bull based on Jiminks review. I am glad I did as this is a good mild English blend. I tried it first in a cob and found the flavor and room note to be awesome. I would have liked a little more Latakia, but it is still a good blend.

I just got my pouch a couple of days ago in the set with Erin Go Braugh and Cest la Vie. I will get around to it soon.
