So I spent £180 and saw an ENT consultant privately (no tobacco for me for a few months!). Within 20 seconds he said I had globus pharangus - I think it's also known as GERD. Basically, silent reflux.
He looked at my throat and, pharynx and nasal cavity and all looked perfectly fine and clear. He was able to pretty much describe my symptoms before I did and, the best bit...when he asked if I smoked, and I said, 'I infrequently smoke a pipe,' he dismissed it as nothing.
So thanks for all your well-wishes and prayers. They have meant a lot to me.

Good news Andre! Hopefully you will be able to take those steps to help reduce and minimalize the GERD symptoms for in the future. Oh, and happy you moved forwards and saw a doctor. Some folks put it off and wait to the last moment before doing anything about a potential medical issue! Here's to a speedy recovery my friend...

Cheers friends. I still have the discomfort, but knowing it's nothing sinister feels great. I didn't think there WAS anything sinister, but there's always that level of doubt, esp when I'm a pipe smoker. And oldcajun123, I'm glad to have a SOB like you here in the patch.

I have issues with certain Burley blends and heartburn. I have had heartburn issues my entire adult life. OTC meds, avoid those burleys and watch the number of pipes in a day is what I do.
Good Luck and good news.

Very good news! I also suffer from GERD, but my symptom is hiccups. Nexium was prescribed to me and it worked, but I’m sure your doc is taking good care of you.

Paddy, I’m very happy your throat issue was minor and you can still enjoy a pipe👍 But you were screwed out of 180 BoB....Quid...Lire...however you say it!!! I thought even in Ireland a specialist would not cost you anything out of pocket. I bet you don’t spend 180 quid on tobacco a year!!

And for peace of mind. I could have waited 2 years but I would have gone spare.

Glad to hear it wasn't serious, LL. Does GERD explain your limited sense of taste?

Good news Paddy! I occasionally have a reflux issue, and just plain old Bicarb does the trick for me almost instantly. Hopefully you can do somethng simple also.
Really--2 years to see a specialist thru National Health?
Hey, BTW, if you're spending less than 180 quid per annum on tobacco you're not smoking enough!

Hopefully you can do something simple also. see, that did the trick for me too, instantaneously... This time not so much. However, there can be scar tissue form over time with GERD. But the ent consultant would have seen that. He said it's a sensory thing. There's nothing actually there but it feels like there is.

Good for you, glad you got a good report. It was wise to spring for a private doctor and get the problem dealt with.

Make sure you keep the acid reflux in check, acid can cause problems with the upper respiratory, and bring on a higher risk of cancer.

I am glad you are doing better. Congrats.
