Public Service Announcement: LL, and anyone who has acid reflux symptoms - make sure your doctor tests you for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) stomach bacteria. It's insanely common, easy to contratc eating out at restaurants, and is one the main causes of GERD. My idiot doctor assumed mine was dietary, and put me on Prilosec fo 3 months. It made me feel like hell, and didn't fix the symptoms. Then he sent me for an h. pylor test... which came back negative - because Prilosec inhibits the test! Back on the damn drug, and me starting to wonder if I had stomach cancer... then finally an endoscopy and stomach biopsy after around 9 months of this doctor's incompetence. They found h. pylori after all, and it took a 10-day antibiotic treatment to get rid of it. It does take a while for all the symptoms to resolve because the bacteria causes the reflux which causes gastritis...But I'm as good as new now. Not saying h. pylori always the cause, of course, but it's apparently very, very common.
And congrats, by the way! It's really easy to start thinking "I'm gonna die of cancer!" when you're even a light smoker. In my case I thought the back-drip from snuff had done it, and still have not taken the stuff since.

Funny, I've been treated for that twice already. And I'm almost convinced I might have it again. I must mention it to the doctor, but many doctors hate people self-diagnosing.

So I spent £180 and saw an ENT consultant privately (no tobacco for me for a few months!). Within 20 seconds he said I had globus pharangus - I think it's also known as GERD. Basically, silent reflux. He looked at my throat and, pharynx and nasal cavity and all looked perfectly fine and clear. He was able to pretty much describe my symptoms before I did and, the best bit...when he asked if I smoked, and I said, 'I infrequently smoke a pipe,' he dismissed it as nothing. So thanks for all your well-wishes and prayers. They have meant a lot to me. Outstanding news! So happy to hear it!

Happy to hear it. My step dad is currently in diagnosis limbo for lung cancer. He (and the rest of the family) are very stressed until we get results from a biopsy. He claims to have only smoked cigarettes in college for a couple years, but he did enjoy cigars from time to time for about ten years. Needless to say I haven't been piping since I heard the news.
Anyone know how common cancer is among pipe smokers? It was my understanding as long as you don't inhale you are at minimal risk.

I think there's a risk of oral and throat cancer with pipe smoking but not so much lung cancer. I also think cancer is a cumulative effect so the more frequently you smoke, the more at risk you are. That could be a load of rubbish though.

Clenching supposedly increases risk, too. Filters may decrease. But really who knows? The studies are very thin on the ground. Not enough pipe smokers for the medical researchers to make the effort.

That's great news Paddy. So what are we all going to smoke an what time to celebrate.? I'm going to try a proper bowl of royal yacht...but not for a while cos it's pouring out of the heavens. Has been pretty miserable weather for the last few days. Just enjoy that Dunhill Royal Yacht like there's no tomorrow... you'll be glad you did! Good health to you!!!

Nowhere near enough... Which is annoying when they lump us in the statistics. I don't think the warnings we get in the UK should be printed on pipe tobacco packaging, because I don't think they're any where near relevant to pipe smokers.

The hell with all the warnings! Birth is the leading cause of death.

And I'm led to believe that genetics play a role. I have lost 4 friends and acquaintances to lung cancer and NOT ONE OF THEM EVER SMOKED! Go figure.
