Morta is a fine wood like the carbon fiber of the pipe world, nice to look at and exclusive in the way that its hardly available to the general piper.

Two weeks ago I received my first ever tins of Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky and enjoyed it in my MM Twain a great deal and finally had a great smoke of it in one of my briars. Today I took the flat bottomed Dublin light brown Morta from the capable hands of Pipemaker John Hines who he entrusted his lovely creation to Pipemaker Josh Whitehead to do the blasting work, this collaboration was a perfect match just like the marble colored stem John chose for the pipe. While I thought I had full enjoyment of the Dark Strong Kentucky by Orlik it wasn’t until I was keeping it smokey in the pipe that the nuances of this fine tobacco slapped upside the head, folks will tell you Morta shine with Latakia but I know VA’s, VA/Per’s and other tobaccos shine as well and DSK is one that will sing in your Morta. banjo

Plus he cares about customer satisfaction. Some of his custom made pipes sell for under $200.00👌👍👍👍

I’m really proud of this particular Morta as it was one I saw in my minds eye gave the picture of what I saw to Rad Davis who had not made a Morta pipe but he did take on the commission, I don’t know if he ever made another before he retired but what a pipe artisan he is. Having some McConnell Latakia Flake in the Rad Davis custom commissioned Squashed Tomato Morta bowl with black bamboo shank and tortoise shell stem keeping it smokey! banjo

Banjo, that’s a beautiful Morta pipe, especially hoe the maker finished the bamboo shank in black....I much prefer bamboo on the dark side. Enjoy the rest of the day and be well👌👍

Actually, that is a deep chocolate colored bamboo, they grow like that, even in fly rods when the old timers wanted to color bamboo they colored the varnish since once heated and tempered bamboo stays lemon colored for lightly heated and tempered culms to dark chocolate in color to culms nearing incineration, browntone is the most normal color they try to achieve in fly rods. With well over 14,000 varieties of bamboo they are as thin walled as grass, which they are, to thick enough that they are used for scaffolding in Asia. Cheers. banjo

I just heard about morta today, and the idea of a pipe made from 5,000 year old bog oak from the European moors, with their layers of human history preserved maybe right alongside this log, has hooked me. I need one!
So I come here to search for opinions.. And find this post. Banjo, I need to thank you. I think. I'm probably about to spend some money, maybe a lot, and your posts are partly to blame. ;-)
Seriously though, that's great information and every one of those pipes is absolute artistry. Thank you for sharing them!
