I recently saw a post here about Carter Hall being a light aromatic. Over the last few days I've been smoking Carter Hall and trying to find an aro note to it. I can't - it's about as plain as it gets. Any comments??

Try a different pipe, mix the tobacco well. It’s a mild Burley forward OTC tobacco I’ve smoked for almost 50 years. It’s topped with Bourbon & Cocoa ......the flavor is in the background. Try smoking in a Cob.

I agree, even though it’s “ slightly “ topped I’ve not seen it listed as an aromatic nor would I consider it an aromatic. Read the info from another pipe forum listed below. I’ve been smoking a jar dated 2001 and still enjoy this old codger blend👌👍 Some pipe smokers categorize it as as aromatic, but I don’t. pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/could-carter-hall-be-classified-as-an-aromatic

Many non-aro blends are lightly cased.
Casing itself does not make a blend an aromatic. Casing is also very frequently done to add a bit of flavour to burleys and virginias.
Edgeworth and Prince albert are both lightly cased but they're pretty straightforward burley blends. For an example of a light aro I'd look at a blend like founding fathers.

Also all of GL pease's English blends are cased in some way. None are aromatics.

CH is not an aromatic as in its exploding with a nontobacco smell and flavor. At one point but not sure if anymore, the company referred to it as a semi-aromatic. Its a more tobacco flavor "aromatic" but many debate how much if any of an aromatic it is. Depending on one's taste, one can pick up light notes at different levels. For you, it might not be a blend to enjoy. It might also be how you smoke it. Even for me, if a non-aromatic tastes like just plain tobacco smoke, its because I'm smoking in it too hard/fast. You can try different ways or pipes to smoke it and all might not work for you. Luckily as it stands right now, no need to try and make something work for you as you have a whole world of things to choose from. Its like a Wonka candy factory out there. Try the snozberries!

It's a pleasant smelling OTC, but I don't consider it an aromatic.

And the sensable dash of va is good sometimes depending on the amount of the va (sometimes I've seen 40/60 is common) its a aromatic for me.

It does smell better than most counter blends. Have you tried sutliffs ready rubbed yet? I love the aroma of that stuff.

… you can call it what you like...I don't consider it an aromatic per se'...I do like the aroma...and its a tobacco that burns quite even...dry or a little damp...I've never been disappointed...
