I mentioned in another post that I had found a Preben Holm Delight last Saturday. Here are some before and after photos. Shot the day I bought it. After cleaning and polishing:

Very nice. Do you mind if I ask how you cleaned the briar? It is considerably lighter in the after images.

Very nice. Do you mind if I ask how you cleaned the briar? It is considerably lighter in the after images. A lot of elbow grease. I scrubbed it using a Magic Eraser wet with isopropyl alcohol and followed that by washing it with undiluted Murphy's Oil. That removed any old finish and grime. After that I wet sanded the smooth sections with 320 grit followed by 600 grit sandpaper. I then worked the the smooth areas over with 1,000, 2000, 4000, 6000 and 12000 grit sand paper and micro mesh pads. I know that sounds like overkill, but the result was a very smooth, almost glass like surface that shined without waxing. I did a light application of caranuba on my buffer to finish it off. I removed the cake and ghost with a isopropyl alcohol bath using cotton balls followed by a 190 proof grain alcohol bath with cotton balls.

Beautiful work, Joe! I love these old Preben Holm/Ben Wade pipes. I have several of them. They are the only pipes I own that I consider too pretty too smoke (Heresy!). Thanks for the detailed description of your restoration process! I've bookmarked this thread for future reference. π

I copied your process and made a file in my "Pipes" folder on my computer. Good info to have. And that pipe really is a beauty.

I am often drawn to a decent Danish freehand/fancy. And this sure is one.

That's another superb restoration. You bring them back to life tastefully. That's what I like about your work, Joe.
